Neck shots.

Last one I attempted was an 8pt whitetail in the snow. He went down. He got back up. Ran off. Heard a shot. Tracked that thing all the way to my brother, who proudly displays the rack to this day. I missed spine at 40 yards, but stunned the deer enough to for me let my guard down. That experience led me to pass on a 6x6 bull in the timber a few years ago with trees covering vitals. Had the neck shot, didn’t take it.
Your bio says from MT, so I assume that whitetail was an 8x8 giant? Or was it a 4-point? 😉

Um… not quite. 😅 4x4 by the skin of the brow tines.

Grew up in IL/MO, 5 years in Montana, in Arkansas for work now (pay is really nice), looking to get back ASAP (gf is still out west).

I've made a couple of neck shots on antelope and elk. They dropped like stones.

My friend's son shot a big 10 point (Eastern count) whitetail in the neck a couple of years ago. He walked up on the buck, leaned his rifle against a tree, and took out his mobile phone for pictures. The buck stood up and simply ran away. A neighbor took that buck a week later. The initial shot had stunned the deer and left a very nasty wound.
