National concealed carry.

I have mixed feelings about cops getting national CCW rights. Why are they better than the rest of us? It is all but impossible in many locales for a private citizen to get a permit to carry, but cops are allowed. Why are their lives more important than the rest of us?

If a citizen passes a background check (no felonies, mental illness, etc.) and takes the appropriate courses to cover legal issues as well to demonstrate competence with the weapon(s) to be carried, then they should be entitled to the permit. (And it should be recognized nationally.)

Letting cops have this "right" first may be a neccessaary first step, but I don't really like it.

It took 12 years to get it for the trained cops who did that stuff everyday of their job for years. It might take a little more than 12 years to get it for other citizens, nationally. Some states share their concealed carry liscense now too. You can't have everything all at once.

So why not add in veterans? I carried a gun daily for a couple of years and was trained how to use it. In fact, I am pretty sure I used mine in action a whole lot more than most cops use theirs in combat.

I just disagree that a cop has any more right than I do to carry a weapon off duty. On the job - yeah, they might need to carry one into a bar, for one example.

Well after watching "Bowling Colombine" {sp} just last night, I'm really happy that no one carrys in N.Z. not public not felons not cops not anyone, we dont have over 11,000 people shot annually in fact probably not even 11. Yeah we happy with that.

It's virtually impossible for a citzen to get a CWP here. Its against the law to even have a handgun in your car unless you are coming or going from the range! Their intetions were grand in thier idea, but it screws the average law abiding citzen. It was designed to get drug dealers if their stopped and can't find anything elese on them. I's been working really well to... Murder rate is at an all time high, and hasn't dropped since it was inplemented. I don't know exactly what the total number murdered is for the year here in Baltimore, but two months ago it was up around 230! IMO more people need CWP here, it may actually do something to stop the crime

I would get one, but it is so hard to carry a 300 Wthby with a Redfield scope on my person while I wear only t-shirt and jeans.... ;)

Especially when I have a shovel and Pulaski hidden in the places where it really counts...

Last I heard, 39 states had it, but that was a couple of years ago. Kiwi, John Lott showed concealed carry prevents violent crime here. The wacco criminals don't know who will shoot them, if they try something, so they go to the next place.

Like in Moosies neighborhood, its better if the criminal goes 5 min down the road to rob/rape someone. They are less likely to have a weapon there.

36 states now have "Right to Carry"

9 states have "Right to Carry, Restricted" (HI, CA, IA, NY, MA, RI, NJ, DL, MD, plus D.C.)

4 states have "Right to Carry, Denied" (NE, KS, WI, & IL)

Tom......Kerry's stand on gun controls:

# Democratic Party shouldn't be for the NRA. (Nov 2003)
# Supports assault weapons ban & Brady Bill. (Oct 2003)
# Voted YES on background checks at gun shows. (May 1999)
# Voted NO on more penalties for gun & drug violations. (May 1999)
# Voted NO on loosening license & background checks at gun shows. (May 1999)
# Voted NO on maintaining current law: guns sold without trigger locks. (Jul 1998)
# Prevent unauthorized firearm use with "smart gun" technology. (Aug 2000)

Move to Alaska. We have a no permit concealed carry law. Anyone who can legally own a gun (i.e., not a convicted felon, crazy, etc) can legally carry a concealed weapon. The only exceptions are, no carrying into bars, schools, government buildings, etc. Also, if you have been drinking, it is a crime. And if you are stopped by a law enforcement officer, you must tell them you are carrying. You can still go through the course and get a permit if you like. There are around 20 or so states that have reciprocity with Alaska and that way your permit is good in the other states.

I can Get a CWP (Concealed weapons permit) without taking a Test in Canyon county where I live
Some day I'll walk down to the Courthouse and Get me one.....

In Boise (Ada County) they need to undergo a test and Practical Shooting... It's only 5 mins down the road.. How funny is that ?!?!

Don't all states have a CWP ?

You only need to pass a background check and provide some sort of proof you are familiar with firearms in Ada County. Your hunters safety card will do it. No tests, no range time. I took a three hour class from the AdaCo Sheriff's dept, all classroom. I actually took that to fullfill the final requirement for my non-resident Oregon CCW permit.

In Idaho, permits are issued by the county sheriffs, they are 'shall issue', and it is up to each sheriff if they want to require anything else. It is this reason (no state statute requirement for proficiency) that many other states will not recognize Idaho CCW permits. Yet, Idaho recognizes all other valid permits. Kind of pisses me off that Idaho does not pursue reciprosity agreements, i.e., take care of its citizens.

I'm not sure where I stand on national CCW laws. I lean more toward letting the states regulate it.
