Are they unit specific? How can I find what units of they are? I have tried to use the MT site, but it is a bit convoluted.

It’s statewide Montana general elk tag . Most of state it’s good for bull but check specific units for regs it’s real easy . Find your unit on regs and see what it says next to “general elk tag “

As mentioned above, it is good for general elk tag hunt districts. To determine whether the district you are interested in is a general one, use the MT hunt planner located here: https://myfwp.mt.gov/fwpPub/planahunt
Pick the species in the drop down, then pick the HD in the next drop down and then look through the regs that will appear. If you are unsure of the HD #, simply go back to the hunt planner landing page, select elk and then hit view map. There a map of MT will come up showing all of the HD's in the state.
