As it states, when did this rule take effect? We’ve now had a few years in a row with silly rule changes.

My apologies if this has been went over but I scoured both the elk forums and this one and didn’t see this answered.
Regardless, I believe last year it was “must apply every OTHER year? Now the regulations state you must “apply in consecutive years”.

I am reading this correctly in that I must apply for a combo license every year or my preference points will be wiped clean? Correct? Anyone have any other info that says otherwise?

I bought my point last year and it still shows up this year so 🤷‍♂️

Yes, this is the change from a few years ago, if you have points when the application period is available, you must apply or lose points. I believe you can buy another point this spring when you apply but I don't remember all the rules with that.

Yup - so I bought one for my wife in December , if she doesn’t apply (she is) this year it would be gone . And she’ll buy another one at time of app in March but yes if you have a pp and don’t apply you lose it

That’s still confusing. I also bought a preference point last year. It’s still there and I’m applying this year. For me that doesn’t fit the definition of “must apply in consecutive years”. Consecutive years means “every year”. Why is purchasing a point even an option??? I guess that’s what I’m getting to here. By rule, my point should be gone, but it’s not…unless that took affect this year.

Preference points (used to draw nr deer or elk a tags) go away if you don't apply, bonus points (used to draw special permits after you have drawn the tag) don't. If you bought pp after the draw you wouldn't lose it, that's how you can go into the draw with 2 points even though you didn't apply last spring.

I understand the difference between pp and bp, I just didn’t understand consecutive years when clearly, I didn’t apply last year but still had a point. I suppose that makes sense, but that’s now how I read it in the regs. As long as that’s the case then I’m good! Simply, I don’t want to gamble $1,000 per year on a tag and not have a plan. But skipping a year I can do. Thanks for clarifying!

You can only buy a pp if you don’t apply - so that’s why you could by one last year , same with my wife . Now if you didn’t apply in 2025 it would be gone. You can buy one years you don’t apply but then you must apply the next year and year after if unsuccessful the first year.

Got it. Thank you! Mostly I was worried my 1 point I purchased last year was going to disappear before draw time.
