MT FWP Commission 2014 proposals

So you all know. For those of us in NW, MT. There is a Sportsmen's Town Hall Meeting @ The Bitterroot River Inn in Hamilton, MT This Thursday @ 6:30PM to discuss these proposed changes. Senators Fred Thomas and Scott Boulanger will be there to hear from us, as well as reps from local SCI and others.

$5 says it focuses on wolves & how we need to poison them.

Not sure... Might not surprise me... Got an email from a Co Worker. Here's exactly how it read...

Senators Fred Thomas and Scott Boulanger invite you to attend:
Sportsmens Town Hall Meeting
Bitterroot River Inn - Hamilton,MT
December 19th, 2013 Thursday
6:30 PM
Recently the MT. Fish Wildlife and Parks Dept. put forth a proposal to dramatically change hunting seasons and hunting districts that will affect every single person that hunts in the Bitterroot Valley. Topics of the meeting will include:
Elk Hunting permits, Wolves, Whitetail Doe Seasons, Hunting District Boundary Changes, Anti-Trapping ballot initiatives, Youth Cow Elk Seasons.
The purpose of the meeting is for your elected officials to hear from the hunting public. Please bring your ideas, comments and concerns.
Guest speakers Keith Kubista from MT Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife will discuss the anti-trapping ballot initiative.
Safari Club Regional Representative Jon Wemple will discuss loss of hunting opportunity with valley wide permits.
For information contact: Senator Scott Boulanger 406-360-1063

Substantial changes are coming for next year's hunting season especially in the Bitterroot Valley. Please attend this town hall meeting for more information. Please pass this on to others!

Thoughts Mr. Lamb? I generally defer to your political insights when we hunters are involved.

I think it's not a bad idea to hold a meeting to discuss these issues, but the main factors influencing wildlife will not be brought up: Subdivision, loss of winter habitat, harboring & poor ethics will not be a part of the conversation, or if they are, you'll be called a communist.

Senators Boulanger & Thomas spent the 2013 legislative session pushing legislation that would have caused wolves to be relisted, would have cratered lion & black bear populations and kept Montanans from ever having a new Wild Sheep herd. While I personally like Senator Boulanger, I doubt that we agree very much on things like tag allocation, habitat v/predators, etc. Similarly, I do not agree with Senator Thomas' take on how to manage wildlife, which seems to focus heavily on spending millions of tax dollars to try and kill predators.

If Wemple talks about the need of sportsmen to sacrifice their opportunity for the resource I'll be very glad and will support him. If it's more of a "wolves took all our elk," then we're not going to agree. Facts matter, and there's a lot of them left out at meetings like this. From all reports, Jon's a good guy, so I tend to believe he's doing what he feels is best for ungulates. I just simply disagree with him and so does the science.

As for SFW - I think we all know where I stand on that den of vipers. Some good folks involved, but so long as it's a ponzi scheme or fast-food franchise, they will never do what's right. This is the same group that testified in support of Test & Slaughter of the Northern Ystone Elk herd in 2013. Do we really think they're in this for the benefit of wildlife or just political power?

What been mentioned is correct. The politicians involved are heavily into the SFW, Utah-style, of wildlife allocation and wasting of hunters money. Not only did they do the things Ben mentioned, and the most eggregious was their support for testing and slaughtering elk, along with managing elk for lower numbers in SW MT, they also were a complete no show when wild sheep needed the support of hunters. They were a no show when hunters were asking for reasonable access to public lands.

I have zero trust in those two politicians. If they are there, along with the SFW guys, you can bet it going to be about bashing the Department (which sometimes is deserved) and blaming everything on predators.

Maybe they have found a new light after the last legislative session, but they're gonna have to prove that to me before I lower my level of skepticism.

Thanks for being involved, Mike. You being there will be useful, for sure.

I guess I don't see the need since FWP already has tentative meetings schedule. Unless there is other motivation?

TO get Rob G's 3 year old out there shooting cow elk and put wolves back on the ESA with bad legislation, duh.

I want an awesome fresh tracks hat like that!
What do you guys think about the purposed limited draw permits in the spotted dog and up in 425 in the sun river? I personally feel like more limited draw areas for bulls is necessary if we want to improve our quality of elk harvested in the state, not everywhere but at least some areas I think have a lot of potential that could be realized with a couple years of limiting the number of bulls taken.
