Moving to the South?

My wife and fam are talking about possibly moving to Oklahoma… I am very skeptical but at the same time, it has simply become too expensive to survive here in the Gallatin Valley. I love it here and never in a million years want to move. I have been saying that if my rent goes up I will not pay another red cent. Period. It’s gone up 700 dollars in 4 years and don’t seem to be slowing down. I’ll never be able to afford a home here and I could get a marvelous looking home there for an affordable rate, although I do not know top wages yet.


Anyone wanna help talk me into it?

Ive spent a weekn in Oklahoma, and some more tine driving through it too.... and a year in west texas. Trying to be courteous to folks from there - so ill just say this... you wont like it.

Got it. Still pretty young- my advice is don’t panic and make a move you won’t like (that’s why I was asking). I haven’t spent much time in Oklahoma, but I don’t think I would enjoy it very much.

When you think about potentially moving there, what gets you excited to think ahead to? If it’s just affordable housing, I think you might regret that. Just my $.02, good luck with your decision.

I've put a lot of thought into Wisconsin. It's still relatively cheap there for land and a nice house. Wyoming is getting outrageous as well, not as bad as you guys, though. It would be hard for me to give up elk hunting every year. Colorado is always an option if you move to another state for zero point units. Having a healthy and happy family that can prosper on my own land is high up there on my life goals. Oklahoma isn't the best of states. Lots of drugs/rez/crime down there. What do you do for work?

I should add that there is some family and kind of a good base to start from there. It’s not just like going totally blind. I agree, I don’t want to leave elk hunting either. Lol that’s why I’m asking bout the red deer those things are so badass but I imagine that’s like controlled guided hunts only or something, not an every year experience

Born and raised down there, it's all relative to what you want.

Oklahoma isn't bad at all, still have a lot of family and friends in eastern Oklahoma. Like every place with larger cities, just know your surroundings and you'll be fine.

Really, really good fishing year round for multiple species in Oklahoma. But public land is miniscule and big game hunting will not be the same. However, you can always travel to do that. When we weren't fishing the kids were on tubes or ski's from late April through October.

The cost of living is a fraction of what it is out here west and from my personal experience, wages are no different, but you gotta put pen to paper with pros and cons. I will warn you, the winters down there are a dream compared to here but the summers can be ridiculously hot.

If you're open to other places, look at Springfield, MO area. Another great place with lots to do with way cheaper cost of living.

My cousin does similar work and makes quite a good living building cabins for rich Texans in the Hochatown area. Plenty of work, affordable housing, good cost of living, a damn fine place to raise a family in my very bias opinion.

Now let's get to the hunting. There's some ok public but nothing like you're use too. Good hunting will probably require some access to private. And the red deer get huge .

Hottest I've ever been was south Oklahoma, it was 110 for 2 weeks I was there. I have no desire to be there in the summer. Fall through spring I might be able to handle it. They do have hogs which is a big perk for me. Oklahoma is a different pace for sure, kind of like island time.

If you look to other communities in Montana You can find a better cost of living. Bozeman is crazy on home prices. Check out Great Falls it has a lower cost of living. It has good schools and medical. PLUS no smog it just kind of drifts away with the breeze. No joking aside it is in the middle of good fishing and hunting sitting in the central part of the state.

I do believe that Lewistown and Glasgow has some big manufacturing plants scheduled to build or increase production there.

Guy goes crazy hunting deer, hogs, turkeys, gators. He also does a fair amount of saltwater fishing. Drum, swordfish, on and on. Good food. But hot.

What town? That’s where I’m from. Tons of hunting and fishing for sure. We do not like to visit during the summer.
