More elk in Idaho

Moosie- Grass is good if it is free. It's not free inside a fence, but is at the park; there's no fence. When hiking in the woods looking for useful rocks I have used free grass as food and even stuff some in my shirts for insulations when its cold. Do you ever use grass???

Miller, lets hear the benefit of some of that higher scientific education. You asked for comments & thoughts but evidently didn't like ol Toms. Are you angry at the Idaho pols who have let this guy skate or Tom for his eloquence?

Alright, asked for comments and Tom came through for me.:D True, I don't agree with what Tom has to say and should have sat back and smiled. As for your question, I chose the later.;)

Harley, do you think this takes "higher scientific education", or do you think this is pretty cut and dried?

...good point.

Mitchell said he referred to the animals as Cervidae, the scientific family that includes elk, deer, moose, and caribou, because the animals could be hybrids of more than one species. “We have very low confidence in their genetic purity,” he said.

??Since my "colage" bio was in fisheries.....I'll defer to those that know- are they saying that they think that "elk, deer, moose, and caribou," cross-breed?? I always thought the the purity issue came from elk/red deer (stag)
It was impossible for officers using binoculars and rifle scopes to see the small aluminum ear tags that identified the five cow elk as livestock before they were shot Monday, Huffaker said. The three young elk had no ear tags, but authorities believe they were calves or yearlings of the cow elk

??So are they just shooting "any" elk that they feel are in the effected area or is that just speculation by this vet?

Mealey was fired about 6 years ago.
Ith- what was that all about? Or is he still in this current position?

What does it cost to raise a squirrel monkey?

Now Ithaca says the guy doesn't even work somewhere. Oak put in the part where they guy is chasing his elk away from the helicopters? They have a bunch of stupid people doing this. Ruby ridge was and is in Idaho, I remember that. Oh my god, don't they have laws about this, how can he be chasing elk around that are out in the open, that's not good. What a mess! This is another Ruby Ridge type thing in the making, eh?

Somebody highlighted something about diseased elk from the newspaper contaminating healthy elk and such. Its undocumented scare tactics in this case, there's nothing to support that is what's happening here, get it? Just because there are some elk somewhere that have been sick, does not mean these elk are sick. Where's the evidence for these elk, get it?

The Tone, I may be dumb at some things, but not as dumb as you sound to me here. How's that? What their saying, is as stupid as this. Hey, there's lots of sick people in the winter. Kill them all before they contaminate the rest of us, next spring. It sounds that stupid to me. That's not the smart way to manage diseases, would you agree with that, yes or no?

Moosie, quit making up chit, you're making it worse. There was NO $*)Q!#@$ tag in that waterbuffalo ear like your ram, ok? Whose talking about grass being free, Ithaca, tell them about the welfare ranchers. The grass is worth more than they pay, right, the elk eat it, right, its not free, get it? I've never known so many dumb asses, a bunch of welfare hunters, that's what you sound like now.

All over between 75 and 100 free elk for Idaho hunters, if the helicopter game and fish people don't get them first. That's the way they manage elk in Idaho? Chase the with helicopters trying to shoot them instead of guys on 4 wheelers. Oh my god. How do you think they should do mtmiller, has this happened there lately?

Here in Texas if an exotic escapes, its open target, 24-7, 365 days per year. Whose ever land its on, they can shoot it, they can authorize any hunter on their land to shoot it, as I understand it. They even shoot loose cattle here, I've heard. If its out on a highway, its going to cause more law suits and damage and human suffering, so the police come and shoot it, they are allowed to shoot from the road.

If those elk were much of problem, they'd be doing more to solve it. I think they like stuff like Ruby Ridge up there, that's what its sounding like now. Is that is Moosie, people just like to have standoffs in the mountains up there? It sounds like a friken mess.

Tom,
Are the escaped elk accused of being white Supremist or of selling sawed off shotguns? Is there really a Ruby Ridge in Idaho? or Did the Weavers live on Caribou Ridge near Ruby Creek?

Moosie can you splain your free grass thing again?

I know that Idaho had the Weavers who are like the elk that let them go through the good fences, maybe. Could be that the elk and wildgame could be like exotics who leave their grass to dance. Sometimes it just takes money to do what elk ranchers want. I guess it is FUBAR in Idaho without good elk and good fences. Who wants to shoot those good elk from airplanes when a rancher can just shoot it without ear tags?

Nemont

Nemont, its not the elk its the vision of the choppers and the guy on his 4 wheeler. Its just made Ruby Ridge pop into my head. Keep smilling mtmiller, things will get better, I hope. We don't have problems like this one down here, they get solved quick, if they become a problem.

Marv- I was a bit concerned about the hybrid thing, but did notice latter, possibly another post/piece, that they were concerned that red deer genetics may have been in the herd to grow bigger antlers. Which does seem plausible and a cause for worry with the elk rut starting to warm up.

I think my brain may have just exploded. Remind me that Texas is not worth visiting.

Tyler- Is it due to the cross-breeding (stag red deer) that you see so many pics of these pasture buglers with crowned racks like the reds? I guess I just didn't realize (yep...naive here) that they were hybridizing the elk to get the inches up- thought it was more like line breeding poodles! Sounded pretty funky when they are talking of worrying about moose-elk (melk?) and other combinations (maribous?)......;)

By the way Moosie.....you made Tom say the "F-word":D

Tom

you don`t get it, most elk hunters would not want to kill a elk from a game farm during hunting season when they are hunting WILD elk, also please limit your posts to 20 words, any more then that and you really don`t make much sense. If I saw one I would shoot it and walk away, coyotes need to eat to!

Ok, I guess they need a bigger posse to clear them out or herd them back into that guys place. I think you should have a law to try and get the meat to some needy people instead of walk away.

I didn't see anything that said this guy had red stag genes in his herd, where's that? You need a law on that, if you don't want it, only Rocky Mountain elk, if people cut fences and you have escapes and such.

Here's the waterbuffalo ears for the "welfare" hunters to see, no fricken tag.
