Starting to look at where to apply for a moose tag in Colorado. I’ve got a number of bonus points now but no where near the max, not that it makes that much of a difference... I am a novice now hunter and have killed a bear, deer, and a number of turkeys. I want to do more archery hunting but curious on people’s thoughts. I am considering applying for an archery moose tag to increase my chances to draw but don’t want to decrease my chances of harvesting on a tag I could likely never draw again if I was fortunate enough to actually draw.

GoHunt is your friend as can compare harvest statistics for CO moose hunts. If there are bulls on public, getting into bow range should not be as tough as most other big game. Moose seem to relax quickly. I shot a small bull in Idaho that was bow range and the bull was watching me then would eat so I stepped closer and the process would repeat. If not many bulls on public or you are picky about antlers then might be tag soup.

The first time I looked at the draw statistics on CPW website I was a bit confused why they put all the draw codes on the same page. It took some reading and research but figured out that CPW does not split the tags up by manner of take on Moose. The reason why, I still have not figured out.

Below is an example of unit 18 where they give out 13 total tags, it shows the hunt code drawn but there are no requirements on number of tags for each manner of take. I also attached how the draw works for the big three in Colorado. So if you are the low number in the draw, it will not matter what manner of take you chose, as long as there is still a tag available in the unit you picked. If you choose rifle and there is a tag still available in unit 18, you will be awarded the rifle tag. If you would have chosen Archery it would not have made a difference.

Yep prior to this year they did the drawing and awarded you a tag in the season of your choice, you were free to change up until the season started. Now you just get to hunt all the way through to the end of all seasons.

Which I agree with based off the way they allocate the tags.

Look at Alaska if you want to hunt moose. Drew in 2012 went DIY and it was an amazing adventure.
