Montana to kill wolves that prey on elk

I hope this happens, with all the reports I read from the hunters here and on other forums it seems the Elk numbers have gone down all over Montana. Hooray for the Gov.

Nice to see the Gov sack-up to the Feds!

Why cant the Feds play with the East. They are always screwing with the West with these intro's, creating National Monuments, Roadless rules, etc....

Montana legislature's attempt to nullify the ESA has some pretty severe consequences for MT's wildlife management funding as well as other pretty significant federal funds for the state. Read the fiscal note attached to HB 321. Another case of throwing out the baby with the bath water. Be very careful what you wish for......

Yeah, I read that, and wonder what the idea is behind this one. Falls under the "Guess we'll show them." strategy of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the frustration of the ESA, and know it is abused. But, looks like MT will get abused if this one were to see the light of day.

Just do what we do here in Colorado and sell OTC elk tags to anyone thats wants one LOL!

Our DOW rakes in over $100 million annually. Of course it sucks if you live here with all the crowding and short seasons, but a good solid money making suggestion none-the-less ;)

Sounds like they might be gettin serious

It's far from serious.

These guys have spent 6 weeks beating up on hunters and FWP. 95 bills introduced that deal exclusively with Fish and Game issues. 46 bills have been introduced that deal with Environmental Protection (the vast majority will have an impact to wildlife habitat). 68 bills have been introduced to monkey with healthcare.

10 bills on economic development have been introduced.

If they were serious, they'd get to work on the issues that people sent them to Helena for: economic development.

I was just talkin about getting serious on the wolf thing. The entire legislation this session is a joke IMO. Too many worthless bills. And I think it would be detrimental to MT to lose that much fed funding every year. So serious on one issue in a very bad way.

There's not much more the state can do on wolves other than make the situation worse.

The Gov's letter was great, but folks are misinterpreting what he said intentionally to further their whacky social agendas.

That's a huge hit to the pocket book, for a lot of agencies who are already strapped. That bites.

Another member on this board said it sounds like I'm angry at life. Actually, life is great. It's the Montana GOP their pea brained Tea partiers, who are attempting to make all of our lives less great, that I'm angry at. If you're a hunter in Montana and you're not pissed off,. The good news is, a lot of ludricous legislation HAS been tabled....those of us that are battling are making a difference. Saddle up for another week.....

So, serious question. I ASSUME the state of WY benefits in a similar fashion as that fiscal note shows? Is that why WY, while they have stood firm with their management plan, hasn't just gone on shooting them in plain view? They haven't just blown off the ESA. Or does WY not pull that kind of money from the feds?

That fiscal note on that bill is a giant eye opener for me. I have told people in many discussions when they are spouting off the typical, "its time for civil unrest", "just kill all the wolves, what are they gonna do", etc, etc, you all have read it on many forums. Well, that is what they will do, pull those funds. I knew they could pull funds, but I didn't realize the numbers were in those realms.

So yes, WY is standing strong in regards to their management plan, right or wrong, the feds still have "it" on everyone involved.

Drahthaar,

Most states benefit substantially from Federal Funds. MT gets about $1.50 back for every dollar sent to the Federal Treasury. Wyoming gets back roughly the same (maybe more). Nullifying the ESA has impacts well beyond the Pittman/Roberts - Dingell/Johnson - Wallop/Brough monies, and extends to federal highway funds, education dollars, and many other programs.

Specific to wolves, MT receives about $600,000 for wolf work, while WY receives about $240,000. WY also appropriates $1 million/year to deal with wolf issues like depredation and compensation out of their General Fund.

At the 62nd leg here in MT, the attempts by some in the livestock industry and legislators has been to try and force hunters and anglers to pay for that tab.

Priorities ... simply frustrating.
