Missouri River Breaks MT- Hunting Elk

I am applying for zone 410-417 Missouri River Breaks MT, Archery. Just wondering where to start looking if I was able to draw a tag. I have access to a jet boat, truck and 4 wheeler. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome. As w most public land hunting, look for areas that other hunters will not go. Randy has a video @ archery elk hunting the breaks.

study maps and when you find a decent looking spot,call game/fish and see what the local biologist thinks of your choice.Alot of times they will suggest better spots for you.No ones going to give up much imfo on here.Once you find a spot then ask what people think and you may get some answers

get familier with the map, from Crooked Creek ramp,5 miles west and 7 miles south. there will be plenty of elk there to hunt. study google earth till yoiur eyes hurt. post here again as season approaches for updates on conditions. you will find elk there. getting one down, will totally depend on you. good luck.

Get a good BLM map, GPS, and landowner program of your preference. Don't take the bullying from the locals (mostly out of state large landowners), and have fun. Even if the big ranch owners are chasing elk for hours in their Hummers, and shooting elk with rifles in archery season, hunt your own hunt.

Agree, should be a sticky, although at some stage we all might have been in a similar situation.

Best idea is to read through that link a few times and then put yourself in other peoples shoes reading about a guy who wants information and nobody knows him from a bar of soap. Fair chance that person has been lurking here and gleaning information over time as well...

How about your contribute a few hunt stories, contribute to other members requests and treat the forum as a place to learn and make new friends rather then as a site to obtain information for self gain.

Where in the heck do you come up with this garbage?
The vast majority of northern petroleum county is locally owned or state/federal land.
As far as the nasty rich guys in hammers chasing elk, whatever. Have you ever been here? The only hummer in the county belongs to the search n rescue response team.

Twodot that is kinda what I was thinking. Sconny you will not have any trouble at all finding elk in 410 that is one of the best units in MT. Saying that you will have a ton of archery elk chasers in there as a matter of fact any of the breaks units have lots of company with archery hunts. Tags are a little harder to get now but pretty high odds. You will see some great elk killing one is a whole different story that all lies with you a little luck and hunting hard and smart. Not any help on 417.

By the way it would be great if you would introduce yourself and tell us a little about yourself. I see you still have not done that or at least not in this thread. Good luck with the draws. Also by the way if you do draw watch the weather if it is even a hint on rain get your A## out of there or you may be stuck for days.

Plenty of easy to find elk. Finding them and getting a shot are WAY different. LOTS of people in there. Lots of checker board ownership in that unit. Calling in that unit is usually ineffective. Spot and stalk, ambush and tree stands are better options. Very tough to find areas to "get away from other hunters" up there.

You'll likely have more difficulty finding a camping spot, and an area without hunters. Good luck.

With the exception of the jetboat on flooded willow years, leave the motors at home. Elk hunting doesn't get good until you walk a couple miles.
