I've been formally checked once while bear hunting in PA, all summer long see the DEC rangers swing through the campsite we frequent with the horses and using the forest roads to get from A to B instead of going out to the paved road so they do have a presence. Have had conversations with the ranger when with a friend chasing bears with his dogs, no checks just friendly "hello's". have had interactions with different LEOs while camping with the boy scouts growing up.
so in my experience NY/PA I think generally we have good presence, still low enough that people get away with poor behavior, but enough that fingers crossed when super poor behavior is going on there will be someone that can come address it
