My youngest will be off to college in two weeks and the wife and I will be empty nesters. Got one last hiking trip in this week before he's gone.

Best of luck to your son in his first year in college. As well as the transition you and your wife will have as empty nesters. Lots to be proud of as you watch your kids start "adulting" on their own. Can't think of a better way than to spend quality time with your son before you send him off to college. Looks like a fun time was had by both of you in some beautiful country.

Both my kids left home within 2 weeks of each other. Daughter to college and son to the Army. Hit me harder than expected.

Now I’m about to experience Empty Nest 2.0 as my grandkids who live 15 minutes away and visit me at my shop at least twice a week, are about to move 4 hours away.

My how time flies.
Watching through the lens of HuntTalk I am confident that he has had many amazing adventures, seen a fair amount of God’s creation, and is more than a competent outdoorsman. I’m also confident that he has been well raised to honor his parents/family and to learn how to learn.
Here’s to a new chapter, may he go out and make the next years count!

Thank you for your kind words! As I get older, time seems to fly even faster. I'm excited for this kid's future, but having him 12 hours away is going to be hard. Guess that's part of life, letting them spread their wings.
Thanks for the idea! Tamed Mt Nittney on the way to school. I carried a pack to train for an elk hunt and she is a athlete so I was to slow. She had to take the pack at one point cause I was seeing stars at her pace. I question my life choices as why did I apply for elk hunt at 8000 feet instead of a nice relaxing Antelope hunt. Saw lots of different mushrooms. Wish I was more of afunguy and knew what we could eat.

On this trip my son kept telling me he could pack all of my stuff if I needed him to since I'm an "old man" now.
I told him to save his smart*ss comments for his elk hunt this Fall. It did make me think I needed better hunting packs for the boys now that they're able to really pack a load. Made the mistake of stopping off at Barney's in Anchorage on our way to our fishing trip. Walked out with both of the boys set up to pack elk this Fall. Now they can really pack stuff for the "old man".

My son is is a rising HS senior this year and will be heading to college next year (most likely Montana State, but we're keeping our options open), so my wife and I will be empty nesters (kind of). I think mom is probably going to struggle with that a bit more than I will. But we're looking forward to taking some vacations again that aren't built around a school schedule.
Your post is a good reminder to slow down and enjoy what will be a very busy last year of grade school with him.
