Definitely a dog. Cat tracks have a “W” shape for the pad and the toes seem a little longer and more offset from the pad. Cat toes are more oval.

Dog or canine. Nails at the end of the toes in shallow snow is another sign in addition to the issues mentioned above.

Perhaps, like others have said it is probably a dog. Generally lion tracks are wider and shorter compared to a dog and this kind of looks that way. Claws at the end of the paw definitely says canine to me.

I'm far from an expert, but I think it's a tape measure. It's my understanding that the larger numbers are one inch measurements, and the smaller numbers are centimeters, which (I think) are a measurement in the metric system. Pretty sure this was a tool used by carpenters, surveyors, etc.

We will one day find out what that tool was used for when the fossil record fills in some gaps. As of right now, most found don’t go past 7 inches, and one can only speculate why.

As a surveyor that has one that has stretched to 8, I can confirm. Measuring tape.

Yours uses tenths though. Irrelevant.

I know this one is a lion track, because I watched it jump out of the tree and make this track. For reference.

The nails were present in the track I'm guessing because these were literally the first tracks from it impacting the ground out of the tree.

Thought I had a better representation but this is about as close to yours as I got. Here is a lion track notice the difference in the toes as well as the pad.

The front toes do not align as a canine would. Also a cat has three lobes on the base of the track.... both pictures are a little melted out and not as apparent....

It's not unusual for lions to show up in MN and WI. We've had a few come through just south of Eau Claire. Typically they don't stick around. I won't pretend to know if that's a lion track or not though!

Could be but I don't think the pad is wide enough. Ive seen claws in tracks that were definitely lions so that doesn't always give it away. However, the size is about right for a cat. Glad to be of no help.

Heres a cat track showing claws.. cat tracks seem to track wider overall vs k9s. Smooth toed and having a rather large pad compared to k9s.
