We use the apple and orange juice jugs that are 1/2 gallon I think. They pack easier, and don't leak, so you can use them for drinking water after a few days.
Or use the 1 liter soda bottles, they do the same thing, just don't stay froze as long.
 
Leave a space at top for freeze expansion. Screw caps.1/2 gal milk jugs lay flat on bottom too.I have had frozen water still after 5 days.I do cover my coolers.Only had a couple split. I keep all my food up off cooler bottoms on bottles or a rack & in Ziplocks. I hate finding soggy food...........

I have been freezing blocks in tupper ware and then vacuum sealing them. Haven't used them yet but that's my plan. Figured when they melt I can just re freeze when I get back. Or chunk if I need space.....
 
Frozen bags get micro tears in them when they shift around during a bumpy ride. Will be a wet mess.
