....but not to hunt.

For those of you who don't know about this already...Alaska's DNR has a Recreational Cabin Staking program for residents. You pay $25 to apply for a spot in one of the designated areas and if you draw out in the lottery you get a permit to select and stake 5 to 20 acres of land.

I will pay for the formal survey and appraisal, and eventually buy the land at the appraised value.

I drew for a patch along the Cosna River which flows north out of the back side of Denali NP and joins the Tanana River between Manley Hot Springs and
the Village of Tanana.

After I stake out my 10 or so acres, I will lease the land from the state for the first 3 years or until the survey and appraisal is done. Lease fees are a $100 one-time application fee and $100 per year, and then the state will finance the balance. The whole thing is going to cost me about $15K when its all said and done, and I eventually get the deed.

I can build on it as soon as I register my corner markers with DNR.

This will be my moose camp for the forseeable future. The immediate area is mix of riverbottom and hills so it will be "moosey" early and late, and there are trails in the area. It is a good area for moose, bear, and wolves and depending on how close to the Park the trails go, probably caribou too. For spring bear hunts the Cosna is also known for producing 20-lb pike.

The plan (for now) is to go in next summer and build a pole barn, a cache, and a platform(floor) for a wall tent. I'll wall tent it for a few years and eventually build a cabin.

Its been a dream of mine to have my own little slice of the boonies and now it looks like its gonna become a reality. :D

Wow, just retired and building a cabin in Alaska. You planned your future well. If you need help with that floor next summer give me a hollar! don

Sounds like all sorts of good things happen after retirement. I don't know too much about this program, but I do remember reading a bit about it. Don't you have to agree to allow public access to your cabin for so many years?

What is going to be your main transportation to and from there? Are you going to boat in from Manley? Fly? Snow machining into the cabin site in the winter sounds fun too.

Congrats! Alaska is an awesome place. I drove from North Pole to Homer last sept. to do some Halibut fishing. Couldn't get enough of the scenery, made the drive go by a lot faster. Good luck with your future plans.

Thanks everybody,
Thre will be a huge investment of "sweat equity" when its all over but I think I will enjoy my time there because of the accomplishment of building it myself.

Don, if you make the trip you have a place to moose hunt for life!! PM me and we can talk details. I'm looking at mid-july 06.

Ovis, Yes, No, Yes--I'll run my jet sled down from Manley and then snowmachine in during winter.

I'm stoked...

Eric,

Sounds neat! I'm reading the book "One Man's Wilderness" right now. It's about a guy who builds a log cabin in Alaska in the 60's with hand tools and nearby materials. I would love to do something like that someday.
