I just finished "Hunting and Trading on the Great Plains 1859-1875" by James R. Mead.
It took a hundred years to publish this book but it gives a first hand account of hunting on the plains on a landscape that has changed vastly since that time.
Probably of particular interest to me because I have hunted and roamed over most of the areas he writes about.
James R. was one of the founders of Wichita Kansas and prominent business and developer of the city for which he is known best.
However, most important to write about for him was his days as one of the early hunters and traders on the plains. That whole world changed drastically over a thirty year period at the end of the 1800's and this gives us a peek into a world I would have love to have witnessed.
Anyway, if you love history and want to read first hand accounts of hunting on the plains this is a great read.
