Hero Pic Controversy

I've read a few different articles about this, and I still can't figure out what the controversy is.

I get the hippy hollywood crack pots that only believe in other people killing their food for them, but this is about the South Africans bitching about someone coming in, spending a boat load of money in their country to legally hunt and animal their government sells tags for.

Is it because it's a woman in the picture and she isn't beating clothes on the rock down by the river, or am i missing something?

I don't understand it either.

I've seen her on TV a few times. Can't say that she had a terrific production but I've seen a lot of shows lately that are much worse. Good to see a female make it in the hunting industry without her spouse like most of the shows these days. Thanks to the internet and all the social media sources it is probably pretty easy to drum up a couple hundred thousand "signatures" for a petition on any controversial topic. As said, above "nice lion" and Good for her!

I saw a show a year or two ago, and it showed Pat Reeves' hot blonde wife shooting a lion right from the road. There was no uproar over that.

Yeah, I'm not sure on the controversy either. Very clean tasteful photo, no blood showing, etc.

I guess she isn't supposed to be smiling?

Melissa has been on the outdoor tv scene for awhile. She is a good shot and good hunter-not to mention pretty hot! It is amazing how all the antis bow their backs when a hot chick shows up with a dead lion. If it wasn't so pathetic, it would be a little funny. She is going to be more well-known in the hunting community now. Her stock just went up!

I've watched some of her shows for a couple years now. She hunts a lot of diff game all over the world, some very interesting hunts. I remember last year when she was going to be on Nat Geo and people went crazy over it. For some reason it just seems like she is picked on by the antis.

Sounds to me like a situation where people don't understand the science of hunting and population control. That a controlled and well managed hunt is beneficial to the health of the animals. Not to mention the likely $30,000+ injected into the local economy where this lion was harvested.

I wonder if they would have the same outrage if it was a government paid PH behind that lion on a gov't mandated Culling Operation? Or a poacher? Because that is what is going to happen if these people have their way and shut down safari hunting.

The anti's needed a target, someone got bent out of shape over the FB post and got a petition going. She did some stuff with National Geographic and they pulled ended their contract with her because of it. Now, hunters are just trying to show support...

Animal rights activists are never going to give it up.

That's why it's critical to always maintain the upper hand both ethically & legally.

This is one Bachman I fully support.

Photo of a woman with a lion is offensive

Two dude's making out isnt. I love these modern times!

I find it ironic when 'open-minded' folks won't listen to valid arguments on why targeted use of a natural resource can be a good thing.

I do feel that Melissa Bachman is targeted precisely (by anti-hunters) because she is an independent woman in a traditionally male role. She is a great role model for young girls and women who are getting into the sport for the right reasons. Anti-hunters see this as a threat simply for the fact that there is a large population of women who can relate.

I've never seen Bachman speak, but it seems she is going to get a lot of publicity out of this. I hope she can relate the story of how controlled, legalized hunting in Africa has essentially saved some species. This could turn into an incredibly positive promotional opportunity for the hunting industry.

Neither of those bother me. Photos of two dudes making out on top of a dead lion, well, that's just art. Especially if it's on velvet.

The biggest reason though, is the loss of understanding from a growing population or disconnected urbanites who think their meat comes from the grocery store. I'm usre Ricky Gervais loves a nice steak but has no clue how it got from the range to his plate. Similarly, animal lovers who think we should never kill an elephant, lion or any other critter don't seem to realize what hunting really does, beyond our funding of conservation.

Capstick has some good stories about why it's necessary to hunt lions & elephants. Both can be destructive forces to local populations if overly abundant or harassing livestock, people. I doubt I'd ever specifically go for elephant or lion, but if I ever do get to Africa and the opportunity arises for a cull or management take, I bet I'd be there.

I read as much of Capstick as I could when I was a kid - and Jim Corbett as well (even though that was India).

Ben - you certainly have the guns to make a fun go at an African hunt.
