Hero Pic Controversy

100 Square miles is 25899 hectacres.

If I'm gonna stare down a lion, I want lots of room for the feces to hit the fan when he charges. 2,000 hectacres might not be enough room. :D

Melissa's been a target of the antis for some time now. There is a perception that she is a "trophy" hunter because she posts pictures of animals she's taken...just like every other hunter I know. As was mentioned before, she was pulled from a show on the Nat Geo channel about surviving in Alaska when the antis raised an online petition, again because of this "trophy hunter" reputation (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/06/melissa-bachman-ultimate-survivor-alaska_n_1862228.html). I always found that funny that they didn't have a problem with a show about surviving in Alaska, which no doubt couldn't be done without securing meat from game, but they did have a problem with Melissa being on it. Her status in the industry affords Melissa the opportunity to hunt all over the world and is always posting pictures of the animals she takes -- and the response they always generate is sickening (just find her on facebook and go through and read the posts). You can read her bio and watch her on TV -- she has been passionate about hunting and the outdoors from a young age and it's clear she's not just another pretty face (although that she is as well!) who is on camera for solely that reason. I've never met a "trophy" hunter in my life (as the antis define it that is), and every hunter I know behaves the same way she does. It's important for the hunting community to come to her back (they failed her during the Nat Geo debacle) and for us to all do what we can to make clear what this sport we love is all about.

I went to Lowes yesterday to buy mouse traps - there is a wide variety of them, most of them being set up so that the user does not have to recognize that there is a dead mouse inside. Except, of course for the live traps. The old classics are 2 for $1, most of the others are $5 each.

So I am not surprised at the hate mail. She is a public figure, and most of us are not (Including Randy, who is invisible to the general population).

Not sure of the nature of the conservancy hunted but pulled this off another site, possibly what some of the uproar could be about? Conversation revolved around the fact lions in SA are raised in captivity, then released prior to the hunt.

"I just returned from another incredible African hunt. I had several conversations with the outfitter and PH's about doing a lion/lioness hunt myself on my next trip back. This is the info I was given....
All lion hunts conducted in RSA will be high fence hunts. The size of the properties hunted will vary greatly with the repuability and quality of the experience the outfitter can offer. The concession my outfitter uses to conduct his lion hunts is up in the Khalahari on 50K acres. Lions, by law are required to roam freely on the property at least 90 days prior to hunting them. These are wary cats that will be very challenging and dangerous to hunt especially with a bow... Any outfitter who guarantees you a specific cat within a couple of days of hunting is probably not reputable and will not be providing you with a quality hunt or a challenging experience. The quality outfitters utilize huge properties and drag the roads to look for tracks. The cats are located by fresh tracks and the hunt takes place on foot from there."
