It's rather interesting to me. With Modern Manufacturing, bullets, brass and powders of today, shot by shot accuracy/consistency has increased dramatically. In my safe, I have several "common" rifles (Rem 700's) right from the factory that shoot incredibly well. One rifle - the cheapest in the safe, a Rem 700 SPS, has shot 2.5" 600 yard groups. Even that lousy little Ruger American shoots bugholes these days.

Which kind of brings me to the point: why spend $12k on a rifle for hunting out to 500 yards when similar results can be had for under $1k?

I'm not knocking the guys who do...but let's face it: one doesn't need a $12k rifle to go shoot epic critters.

Just imagine how cool you’d look pulling a gun worth the same amount as the truck out of the back, though!

I see this at the mountain bike park all the time. Beater cars and trucks with $5000 bikes are a constant.

Totally agree. One of my buddies drives a $100k new truck and another drives a 23 year old Ford. Both get to deer camp every year just fine. Different priorities and different incomes.

If I wanted some super long range gun, I'd just have Kirby Allen build me one; he also does the load development with whatever bullet you choose. For a fraction of the price. Heck, the 6.5 he built for my granddaughter shoots 1/2 MOA at 600 yards with 125 gr Hammer HHTs. Less than 2 grand.

As per the above, could I have gotten her a Tikka or something, which likely would have been fine? Sure, but Kirby is a good guy, keep some money in Montana.

I worked at a bait shop in college, always amazed me. We had a guy one night with a new bass cat that had to have a tow truck called because the trans went out and he couldn’t get it back up the ramp.

I wish I could afford one of his boomers. I really like the .30 caliber offerings he has. The guy is a wealth of knowledge. He was shooting long range before it was cool. mtmuley

It’s a matter of scale. If I spend 1% of my yearly income on a rifle, not a big deal. If a guy making 7 figures spends 1% of his yearly income on a rifle - same no big deal.

There’s been some epic shopping sprees at our local toy store by the well heeled, and I’m no stranger to spending on guns.

Even if I had all the money, I’d build what I want vs Gunwerks. Not hating, I just want the control to spec everything just so. I’d probably consider a lathe…

Oh, I’m the same way.

Given a $12k budget I’d rather have (3) $4k rifles than a Gunwerks - but if a guy is swimming in those waters then the $12k is a drop in the bucket.

Kirby built my first custom, a 6.5x284 around 2004. Didn’t really have the money to jump into that end of the pool correctly, but I jumped anyway. I can’t believe how many questions I emailed him, he was remarkably patient.

Based on what we spend on travel volleyball for our daughter, you may come out better financially with the shooting system!
