Grouse! Let’s See Them

Due to low human hunting pressure, grouse tend to be fairly tame in parts of Alaska.
Interior has sharptails, ruffed and spruce grouse.
Southeast Alaska has sooty grouse in the coastal rain forest.
The season is Aug 10 - March 31.

Took the dog out for some elk scouting and must’ve put up about a dozen grouse, mostly spruceys like this hen, but we saw some ruffies too. Season will be here soon!

Grouse season opens this weekend! I have a "problem" (addiction? obsession?). Supposed to be rock climbing in the bighorns but I think me and the dog are going to sneak away and thump some duskies....

Another good year for bird numbers in CO. Berry crop is insane this year. Every bird's breasts were stained purple and I personally ate about a quart of wild raspberries.

2 of our first 4 points opening morning below. Shooting was rusty.

And PSA for Weatherby auto owners - don't forget to swap the 'Heavy Loads' piston out of the Weatherby for the 'Light' after turkey season. I did that, and thus the semi-auto was mostly a single shot as light little target loads usually don't fully cycle the bolt with the 'Heavy' piston in there.
