Having never shot an elk, do I....

a) Be set up first thing tomorrow morning (opening day) ready and willing to put it down.

b) Hold off and wait for my father-in-law to come out and hunt next week to increase the probability of at least getting him into an opportunity to get an elk. It will be his first ever elk hunt.

there's more elk out there for pops.

go get him. I'd try cow calling him in. You have one really good shot at calling in a mature bull at the beginning of the season.

I think you'd be lucky to find the same bull in the same area a week from now reguardless of other pressure.

Go nail his ass or try, give your FIL some fresh steaks and point to the mountain and tell him if he wants his own, thats where you find em. :)

Good luck if you go.

I am all ready to go. As soon as I am done with work this afternoon I am going to head out and set up camp across the canyon from the bull where I can watch him tonight. I'll have to plan on finding some more animals for the FIL.

The bull made the choice for me by pulling a Houdini and disappearing. Miles of walking and glassing produced only one cow between all day yesterday and this morning. Driving on the way out I found what I think is the herd I was looking for about two miles away (in the opposite direction of where I was searching). If it is them they picked about of steep of a place as I've seen elk in. I will climb after them...but I can't say I am really looking forward to it :D
