Finn from the Cascades, Season 4

We’re back. We passed. Three other dogs didn’t. It’s a hard test with lots of areas where little shit can go wrong and fail a dog.

Finn took a wrong turn back on his 300m fox drag and retrieve, got a little lost, and I had to whistle him in. He took a big scoring hit as a result, or he would have had an exceptional score.

Finn got very high praise for his blood track (10 minutes for a 400m overnight track) and was never off track by more than about 5-10m.



I waffled a LOT early in the year on whether to do this test. Having done it, I will take every future Drahthaar through this level. The bond with the dog and the utility of the skill set is invaluable.



We’ll be getting hips and shoulders x-rayed. A breeder at the test was very interested in Finn.

Been pretty light on photos as of late. We found a covey of quail yesterday, but the state section I was hunting has been absolutely hammered this year. I called in a favor from my best friend for today.

Some of both. It rained all morning, so early on they were holding incredibly tight. The first rooster tried to back door us and Finn pinned him between us. The second was running in the heavy cover and flushed when Finn pointed him. The last rooster flushed wild while Finn was retrieving bird #2. Fortunately, I’ve learned my lesson about immediately breaking open for a reload after killing a bird and got him as well.

We got X ray results back from Germany. HD-A hips and no signs of shoulder dysplasia.

We did an overnight trip, as I got tired of waiting to see a photo of Greenhorn carrying a whole ram over his shoulders out of the Spanish Peaks.


This is what my shotty looks like, in case anyone finds it in the road.
It was a very cold and blustery day. My face was pretty well sandblasted with snow by the end of the day. We hunted a brand new spot that did not disappoint.




Day two was a little warmer and a familiar haunt.
