Finally some good news

Can those disabled hunters use a crossbow during firearm season ?

Yes they can.

In my opinion, bow season and rifle season are not comparable. Totally different experience favoring bow season.

I get what you’re saying, but from my observation allowing truly disabled people and 65+ does not really have any impact at all (allowing it to become a free-for-all like WI is a disaster, however).

No I don't think it does either, If you're truly disabled then yes let's create opportunities. Hell make a separate disabled season for those that truly are to up the odds of a good hunt. Better weather, less hunting pressure. Archery season was designed as a primitive hunt for those to that were ok with more of a challenge just like muzzleloader which has spiraled into something else. Not for everyone to get to hunt the rut or make sure they don't miss they're 105 day season etc etc.

I wonder if there isn’t some valuable context missing here- how in the world did disability permits increase 1700% in just a few years?

Did the criteria change or something? That seems way to big to be just spontaneous growth.

Also, how does the author of the quotation know that there were so many “illegal” crossbow applications? If they were indeed illegal, why was the current law not being enforced as a starting point?

Lot of questions on this one, but at its face I feel bad for legitimately disabled people in AZ that lost this opportunity if this is really how it all went down.
The same way something like 70% of Olympic athletes are asthmatic. Because it’s an easy way to game the system as long as the doctor will sign the note.

And for the record my step Dad and my Grandpa jumped on the crossbow bandwagon. Actually I take that back my grandpa had the disabled permit before it was legal for everyone. Anyway, yes I criticize the legality of it just as hard in front of them.
How about for disabled veterans?

But why just the last three years? It’s not like people have only recently started to become lazy/tried to game the system.

I wish there was a link to an article with some additional information on this. And/or I wish I wasn’t so lazy to look it up myself. Such is life😜

See post #82.
I’ve really tried to stay out of this thread but it comes down to a bunch of guys hitting the lazy button. A guy I went to highschool with shoots a left handed bow now due to a utv accident. Says he will quit before he puts on a draw lock let alone a xbow. All these guys act like they need 80# limbs and a slider sight. All this new technology a 50# bow is lethal enough for an elk. I say that as a guy that killed his first bull with a bow at the age of 13 with a 52 pound bow.

Might be something to do with the fact crossbows are everywhere now in the hunting world not too long ago, it was very uncommon. That's my best guess.

I remember as a kid there was a guy who was on a knight &hale hunting video. Who only had one arm. He bowhunted drawing the bow with his teeth...that's a bowhunter.

Compound bows are an axis away from being a crossbow.
I think the ability to lock the draw is more important, not the horizontal v. vertical axis. Add to that the ability to crank to a higher draw weight resulting in increasing speed, flattening trajectory and giving higher accuracy across distances. Just more efficient.
