It is quite obvious that your bull is a regressed bull Oak. So it is disqualified, because at one time it had larger antlers ;) I mean look at the worn down royals on that bad boy. Even though i can't see the face of your bull I can only imagine all the battle scars it has. I bet the ivories were small too, almost not even there? ;) ;) ;)

Man I gotta hunt elk in 2010.....

Fun stuff......my favorite part of the hunt:):)

A bloody arrow...........a blood trail that Ray Charles could follow................the Prize at the end of the red rainbow:D

Love this comparison......Zachs first September bull in 06, then his next and last September bull in 09.....One extreme to the other:)LOL Pretty sure he can't shoot one smaller or bigger so we will have to fill in the gaps from here on;) Sorry for the double post on the bigger bull but the comparison brought a smile to me....

Dink you could take some advice from me:

1982.jpg

I have since learned well to follow the above rule. Doesn't mean I don't eat elk steaks every fall, it just means sometimes you gotta settle for a cow ;)

Pack out: 0 miles ;) ;)
cow.jpg

I totally agree with the packout rule.............better be close to the road if its a baldy:) Hence the photos of my easiest day elk hunting ever.........the wack em and stack em day:)

Messy MT shed hunters leave these things laying all over. I have to come up there and clean up the forest in September. One set cost me a crack at a bull. Clean up MT please!!

Dink..................send over the GPS coords, and i'll make sure its clean for your next trip:)

By far the most fun I have ever had on an elk hunt, and I didn't even have a tag. Son shoots this one opening morning. Spent the better part of the the next 24 hours getting him to camp. Brother was along to do the heavy lifting and firewood cutting. Great memories.

Would be great footage if I had the camera on the proper bull. The audio is world class. Sounds like someone just found out they won the lottery. But without good footage, the audio falls into the - "guess you had to be there" category.

My dad drew a Oct. rifle tag in Idaho in 99. This allowed us to return to the place I grew up hunting in grade school. Unfortunately you can hardly find an elk in that country now. The wolves have really buggered things up.

Some of the prettiest country I've ever hunted in.

You guys sure made a great thread here! I may have to go out to the barn and drag down a few of my dinks, so I can take crappy pic's of them in the snow, gotta be part of the best elk thread on the web you know!

BTW, you think 30 is too late to start taking decent field pic's? lol.

All i could get last year were skinheads, shot two of them not trophys but got alot of meat.

Man, first Hunt Talk puts up the best antelope thread on the entire web. Then the best sheep thread in all of hunting cyberville. Now this elk stuff.

What you guys going to do for an encore, next year?

I totally agree. I have enjoyed looking at all three threads everyday to see what has been added.
As for what next, I love whitetail, but that has been done to death. I would love to see something else that I have never had an opportunity to hunt.
How about moose?

I'm really no elk hunter, I usually have about ZERO ability to lay off the trigger...grew up hunting elk with my Dad and Gramps. You flat didnt pass up a legal elk or you got your ass chewed...period. Because of that, I've shot 41 elk and I'm reluctantly starting to become more selective.

Anyway...a few pics from back in the day.

First elk, 1980

First bull around 1982:

buzzelk11.JPG

A trailerload of game we took on opening day...wow, that was a long day, 3 mule deer bucks and 2 bulls between 5 of us. That was a great spot, until an outfitter leased it and we got the boot.

The first elk I shot with a bow, I believe it was 1984, awesome photo too:

buzzelk10.JPG

Another great photo, the first six point I shot, in about 1986:

Another top quality photo from the 80's:

Buzz got the boot and now you obviously can't find anywhere to go.. :D

Hey, here's a beauty.. never would have found this bull had it not been for some creative circle, drop and swoops from a red airplane.. creative wildlife hazing with hunting clients in mind... an outfitter almost got a Christmas card with this photo.. and a big Thanks! :D

My Grandfather and I with an elk he shot one opening morning, I think Gramps was about 75 years old at the time.

grampselk2.JPG

The last elk Gramps shot, I believe he was 80 at the time. Talk about a patient elk...it took me 20 minutes to point the elk out to him. It just stood there the whole time, never moved. But, once gramps saw it, it took about 2 seconds and his 300 winchester barked...and one cow elk bit the dust, shot through the shoulders at about 175 yards.
