Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Elk Photos

Here is the smallest rag bull on the thread. 3 point on the big side, busted off on the other. But...............we were back at the house eating pancakes by 10:30am.;)

Dam I love killing elk.

Since this is turning out to be THE elk thread, I just can't let this pic die off into the past. Sorry to beat a dead horse.

One thing I have noticed, alot of the really fun places to hunt elk have 2 things. Crickets and Cactus. NW Colorado, the Breaks, the Jila etc.

It must have been 80 degrees that night. I packed all night and hit the road in the morning.

Man, first Hunt Talk puts up the best antelope thread on the entire web. Then the best sheep thread in all of hunting cyberville. Now this elk stuff.

What you guys going to do for an encore, next year?

This Nevada bull faked me out. Thought we was a lunker. His antlers went way back. Tines look really long. Tip him over. Walk down and think I have shot a mini-elk. I have shot cow elk with a body size not too much smaller than this guy. Oh well, no catch and release allowed.

Jereep and NVLongbow were along for the ride. Great fun.

Dink I think I shot his older 4 point brother. He officially scored around 180 I think. My best muley, I mean elk to date:D He sure didn't look bad with 10x42's at 50 yds. Ground shrinkege got me.

Messy MT shed hunters leave these things laying all over. I have to come up there and clean up the forest in September. One set cost me a crack at a bull. Clean up MT please!!

My theme seems to be rag bulls and Toyotas. Maybe I should buy a Ford?

Little brothers are good for something. Man we couldn't even hardly walk the next day after that pack. Not sure why I shot a elk down there.

Wish I had more patience. This bull made for a fun hunt, but a guy with more discipline would have fared way better. Me and my itchy finger.

It did make for some good scouting of places to hunt in the future.

Jumped 3 bulls on opening AM, 2 ran off, this one hung around... as he had a broken front leg (it was actually missing from the knee down). Even better than removing a cripple from the forest was walking the first load (with antlers) by the douch-bag outfitter's wall tent, only a quarter mile from where the bull was taken. The particular outfitter is well known for messing with the average guys back in those parts.. "Find somewhere else to hunt" he yelled at me once... again, while packing a set of antlers off the mountain, above another one of his camps.. :D

Dink you could take some advice from me:

I have since learned well to follow the above rule. Doesn't mean I don't eat elk steaks every fall, it just means sometimes you gotta settle for a cow ;)

Pack out: 0 miles ;) ;)

This is the last elk I've killed since moving to AK. Hopefully there will be an elk hunt in my future for this fall.....

Good lord GH!!! Do you have a pic with all your elk racks??? Where do you keep all of them? I imagine your garage is full enough that you have to park outside?
