Elk .... Let's see them!!!

I will try to keep this going, but my inventory of pronghorm pics far exceeds my elk pic inventory.

2004 - Cental Montana. Someday I will shoot a bull that has no broken points.

Nice bull!

I usually hunt elk in Western Montana (Lolo's), thinking about switching it up and going central. Sawtooth's maybe? Any suggestions?

A week and a half out from elk season here in Montana has me thinking on last year. This was my first elk, and I was lucky enough to get it solo with my bow. October 10th was pretty warm last year, so I decided to sit water during the mid-day and this guy came in with two cows and a calf. After a few minutes of walking around and drinking, he stood at 32 yards and I shot him, but hit a little far back. I heard him crash after 5-10 minutes, but wasn’t sure at the time so I waited an hour before blood trailing. He made it about 100 yards or so, luckily he was quartering a bit at the shot and hit lung on the off side (you can see the exit wound on the one picture. Sevr broadheads get the thumbs up from me). I sure was thankful for my two buddies that drove down to help me pack. I just finished the last chunk of backstrap and the freezer is empty. About time to fill it back up!View attachment 192316View attachment 192316View attachment 192317View attachment 192318
So awesome! I hope to get my first this year.

Thank goodness I grew up in an elk hunting family.
Grandpa with my 2 older brothers and me (age 1) skinning elk. (No my mother doesn't dress me anymore!) ;)

My grandpa Roy with the last bull elk (atleast that's the story we always tell!) that was legally killed in the old Railroad Ranch in Easten Idaho before It became Harriman State park.

Dad would always let us miss 1 day of school for the rilfe opener when we turned 8 years old. I was so excited that I made myself sick and puked and couldn't go. Later that season, on my first trip, my 2 older brothers and I got to help drag a cow out.

Then I got to go! My first elk.

Then it was my turn to pay it forward. Good buddy called and told me his dad, Sid, had just turned 60 and was diagnosed with cancer. He'd never killed a bull elk so "no pressure", but you've got to find him a 6x in Wyo this fall. We did! Wyo 2011.

My 12 year old daughter, McKenzie, with her first elk. 10 year old sister Paige assisted! Wyo 2011.

I had all 4 of my daughters on the same hunt that Kenz harvested her first elk. This time family friend, Tom, took a cow for the freezer. I'm 4 for 4 on daughters. If I were an angus bull, what would I be worth since I only throw heifers??????::D

Amazing photos mate and it is so great to see you getting the kids involved. I am from Australia so I have never been Elk hunting but it is awesome looking through the pics you guys are putting up.

Dropped a cow on the Idaho opener a couple of weekends ago. We were at 10k feet and drowning in cows, but were too early for antlers despite a *lot* of glassing. We know where they hole up in the summer, but man is it tough to get on them in there if they aren’t interested in the cows yet. Some openers they are up and on them, some years they aren’t! Happy to have a full freezer. Onto the deer…

Here's the deal. Since the "Let's see them" pronghorn thread is one of the most viewed on this site, and most viewed by lurkers, I am thinking we should do the same with elk and show how many elk guys on this site take.

This thread will be a "sticky thread" and be at the top of the Elk Forum, from here on out. It doesn't matter when you shot it, how you shot it, or if you were just the person helping, this is the thread to post elk pictures. No need to post a long story, just a pic and a few notes about the hunt.

Be as specific or vague as you want, as far as location.

Here goes.

2005 - Missouri River Breaks rifle tag. My son's first elk. Most fun I ever had on an elk hunt. We were joined by my brother, Logdawg.

Thanks for doing this. I hope this thread becomes as popular as the pronghorn thread. I know you guys have shot a lot of elk, so post 'em up right here, even if they have previsouly been posted on another thread.
Went through the thread! So much fun! I actually saw one of my friends post from 2011, way before I knew him!

Excellent pictures and memories! Thank you for sharing

Little bull for my buddy. First elk knocked in camp for us. Lots of learning for these quiet Roosevelt’s but we got one and had 2 others talking! Most people thought we were crazy calling
