elk hunting record

Old thread - same subject. Elk hunting record- 8 days, 11 days no elk seen back in 2006 - holy cow those were such rookie numbers when the gettin was good!

I’ve been keeping a calendar of my days out this year and it’s mind boggling how few elk are where I’ve enjoyed hunting the most over the years. Since the rifle season opened I have hunted every day except 4 days. I think I’ve missed 2 of the last 24 days. Most of those days hunting gallatin canyon area and 1 possibly 2 elk sightings, maybe same elk just traveling from one drainage to the next. Almost ran over a big herd in the dark on the way out the other morning. I still like going. Good thing seeing elk isn’t my barometer for enjoying a day out hunting. I see them on private land at least so I know they are not extinct.

9 days is my longest it was consecutive days. I hunted 21 days straight that season just during rifle.

Hunted my old haunt for the past ten days and never cut a fresh elk track. Usually you cut a couple lone bull tracks here and there. Day 11 I spotted 2 sets of tracks across the canyon and 2 rag horns standing in them. My brother and cousin killed both of them. Only damn elk I've seen in that country this year that we usually see quite a few in. It's definitely been a weird year for us too.

Kurt, I actually took my rifle for a climb today. Moose tracks, deer tracks, cougar tracks, no elksies. Post holing in up to 18" of snow. A good workout and nice sunrise, but my elk hunting days are about done. I didn't realize how good it was when it was good - actually when it was great. At least I had the mountain to myself today. I never used to see anyone, but lately more and more people.

I have never kept a record of how many consecutive days of not seeing any elk, but there have been years, when seeing anything was difficult.

This past summer, while getting up very early to run bird dogs from horseback, I saw a very nice bull, twice, at the edge of an irrigated corn field. Each time it was well before sun was actually up. The corn field was triangular field wedged between the interstate and the frontage road I was on. The distance between the two roads was no more than a quarter mile.

We saw cows nearly every day this year, but never saw a single legal bull.
