I don't get the Fighting on whether People poach by the roads or not. Is it because someones Defending 4-wheelers or road hunters ?

I personally think someone in a Vehicle poaches more then back country hunters but I don't agree that means most hunters on 4-wheelers poach. Am I missing why the argument on that is going on. is this about Poaching ? Roadhunters ? 4-wheelers ? Or you cuz some of you don't like each other ... ?

What I do understand :

1. Game ranch arguments. (Pro's and con's)
2. Wolf arguments. (Pro's and con's)

What i don't understand :

1. questions on Who poached more. (Aren't they both Cons ?)

Does it matter ? if so, Please explain why ? I'm lost on that arguement from both sides....

Moosie,
I think it is a feeble minded attempt to justify not closing anymore trails to ATV traffic. The poster wants you to believe that onces trails are closed it makes it easier for Illegal ATV riders to get up there to poach game and not get caught. The less access=less people=less chance of getting caught thought process doesn't make one bit of sense. You tell me of anywhere in research, anecdodal evidence or common sense that says reducing the number of people and access to an area is bad for wildlife. That is what the poster in question is saying.

Ultimately it doesn't matter poaching is poaching and it usually takes place near a road.

Moosie- It is an issue based on closed gates/ less access. Poaching either way is bad, there is no argument about that. The point I have been making is closing areas will reduce the amount of poaching. That is a pro. Others were making the point, the mentality of most poaching is based on ease and opportunity. By closing off roaded areas, it will limit the amount of poaching done.

Also.... I don't see the argument from a Trophy Poaching Standpoint ?

First, Buzz says that there are no trophies near roads then he says more people poach trophies from the road. Buzz, if all the trophies are in the wilderness and you can't kill one if you own a 4-wheeler are people really poaching trophies near the road ?

i have a topo from the 70s that show trails that arent on the new topos and i can honestly say that many of them are still open and often go thru closed areas..as for the USFS.. i know of a USFS big wig giving keys to open gates during elk season, to some family members...

hump :D :D I think Moosie/Buzz/Matt should all pack my stuff deep into the woods... while i limp behind with my cane... otherwise i will be road hunting and glassing :D :D :D hump

Moosie, where did I say anything about "trophies" in regard to poaching near roads. The lazy road hunting poacher will shoot whatever is easiest.

So, you're implying that its OK for lazy slobs to poach near roads because they arent poaching trophy sized game?

Poaching a fork-horn near the road is still poaching...trophy size has nothing to do with my arguement.

Bottom line is that more poaching of game happens near roads than back in the sticks, just a simple fact.

Sageghost, if what you say is true about the FS keys, report them to the nearest Regional headquarters immediately. The person(s) involved with that are in severe violation of hunting laws, illegal use of government property, and a host of other violations. If you know it for sure, the "big wig" will lose his job over it, I dont care if its the Chief...thats a major, major violation and is not tolerated anywhere. Thats an automatic, "you're looking for a new job" violation...no questions asked.

Actually it was CJCJ that talked about Trophy Poaching and with all the Crap everyone spreads I have a hard time remembering who said what :)

I wasn't implying anything. You know that. But I also disagree with the definition of Poaching. But thats ahole 'nuther topic.

I agree that there is plenty of poaching on the roads. I think more big buck poaching then in the back country too. I think sometimes people do it not thinking or caught up in the moment. Thats why F&G are so succesfull at catching people. I also think the Bigger Rack Syndrom is to blame for it too. But greed is the Reason for Stealing,Lust the reason for Raping, Willpower is the reason for doing the lack of the right thing. Non are still OK.

I will disagree that the "Party hunting" poaching doesn't go on alotthough in the back country. Whether on the road or off the road. I know in Idaho it's still practiced alot. Lawfully right ? No. But there is a good ol boy mentality out there and people still think it's the Good ol days. Guys like you might have never done it, Guys like me have learned it's not right and might not have done it but know at least someone that had. Some hunt for a different reasons. I'm also guessing there isn't many guys that I know that would pick up the First stone in this Glass house.

At any rate, Roads do make it easier. But There are plenty of poachers that hunt off the roads too. Not all poachers are Fat lazy slobs. There are some Successfull ones. Ones that willfind a Big buck and Wack it the day before opener or hike in with a Contender durring the bow season, or hunt the wintering rangge to lay down a Big antler jsutto pick the rack up in the Spring as a Winter kill.......... Ones like in 10-bears posts. problem is alot of times they get sloppy and get whats coming to them.

...but poaching is still poaching IMHO. It's like you can't be a "little bit pregnant!" Moosie, as far as the
Bigger Rack Syndrom is to blame for it too
I don't really think that plays as loud as you'd think- most poachers from what I've seen are just opportunists...it really doesn't have much to do with the size of the animal as much as having to do with the fact that they (most) don't have to put the effort into hunting it "correctly" and ethically. In CA, for example, the DFG's robo-deer are purposely very average bucks because they don't want to fall into the "entrapment" crap of someone saying that, due to the size of the rack, they just couldn't help themselves popping one from the road...and they have no problems in getting takers on these small 2x3 targets their using.

I do agree that when it comes to folks poaching for profit, that is selling off of large racks, mounts, etc., that you would definatley see someone be more selective in how/what/where they break the law but I think this makes up an extremely small part (though it gets most the press) of the poaching problem.

They're all fuggin crooks in my opinion :BLEEP:
