Define backcountry

I think my definition, and the word I use is "wilderness" Wilderness to me is someplace you float plane into. A small lake that is not accessible by any roads and it would take a week or more to hike to it. I also have used the word when we plan a horse back trip into the wilderness that takes 5 to 7 days to get to where we want to camp. We saw a lot of back country or wilderness on our canoe trip down the Yukon River. And I am told that we will see even more very beautiful but remote wilderness when we canoe the Mckenzie in Canada, which thanks to Covid got postponed. When my father took us to The Grand Mesa in Western Colorado, we rode horses through the mountains for 6 days and never saw another human being or road. And when we did get back to the truck and trailer, nothing had been disturbed while we were gone. Thank you Colorado

When I was a kid the only areas that I ever heard called "backcountry" were the units in Mt that elk rifle started in September. Hellroaring and Bob Marshall. My dad used to talk about the Gallatin area that was a backcountry unit before all of the roads. That was in the 1950s I am not sure when it ended.
Today I can't decipher what it means. Pretty much nothing.
