My only deer so far. Pretty happy with this one though. We hunt mostly for elk and this one just happened to pop up when I had a deer tag in my pocket. Grand Mesa - 2009.
Here's mine from last fall. Fun hunt. This buck was with a doe and showing off for her. First week of November. He had good genetics, but young. I didn't regret shooting, it was the only shot I took at a big game animal last year with a firearm.
2011 was a fun year of hunting. My sister did a guided hunt with Pat Sinclair and shot a 16" pronghorn, this mule deer, and an elk in 3 days of hunting. That year I'd drawn an eastern MT elk permit, and jumped this buck while hunting public land. I didn't shoot, and ended up tracking him in a skiff of snow for almost a mile before getting a 2nd chance. He caught up with a group of does and decided to chill out. Not an old buck, just a smidge under 180, really had some potential, and scored well for how young and light antlered. Fun day of hunting.
These are from public land in Wyoming, the one with the stickers at the bases grossed 188, and the other 192. A friend from WY first spotted the 190+ the day prior to season and we both thought he was in the 170s and wanted to look further, so we hiked several miles past him and camped. I had a really nice antelope found that year in WY ( and the season opened in 5 days), and late in the day of the deer opener, I mentioned I'd like to go back and try to find that 170s buck again. He was bigger than we thought. Even though I spent 3 full days before the antelope opener of looking for the buck I was rushed on the deer hunt for.. I never found him.
This is my biggest, oldest buck. If he matched up, he would have scored 200. He grossed 194 and netted in the mid-180s. Private land, limited quota permit, and the rancher actually phoned me - telling me about this buck on his place before I headed over there to hunt. As easy as it was, I do have him in my trophy room as a European mount. He's got a cool gigantic noggin, very old, high mountain buck - taken on winter range.
My son shot this whitetail buck last year. He's pretty good with a rifle, it was running, and not exactly close. And the wt he took the year prior on his grandfather's place, not long before he passed away.
