When a friend drew an elk tag in one of the worst god forsaken brown bear hellholes in the world, it was looking likely that I would be tagging along to join in the type 2 fun that would follow. I ended up drawing some other tags that saved me from, errrrrr I mean prevented me from joining, that adventure, but not before I'd bought an almighty enormous handgun. I usually carry bear spray in grizzly/brown bear country, but I thought it might be nice to at least be very noisy while getting eaten alive.

So now I have a Taurus Raging Hunter 460 S&W and no one makes a holster for the thing. There are a couple options out there, but they're big sloppy fit universal holsters, and most are shoulder or chest rigs. I wanted a holster that would mount onto my pack hip belt, that I could wear with a bino harness on, that wouldn't dig into my thigh, and could easily be drawn in a hurry. The only way this was going to happen was with a custom holster, and even then, it looked like a long shot.

I searched around and eventually found a company to make it in Loveland (Colorado Custom Holsters). I don't want this to come off as any kind of "advertisement", as this is really about finding a solution to a gear issue that I had. Their design process was a great experience. They met with me to understand what I needed, came up with a way better solution than I had in mind, mocked up a prototype to test fit, then made the holster out of kydex. It turned out perfect.

What do others use for backcountry hunting holsters?

Haha holy eff look at that monster! Please send vids of drawing quickly and shooting.

I use a basic OWB Belt clip kydex holster for my side arms on the SG pack belt and it can easily be transferred to pants belt if my pack is dropped. But I carry little pistols.

I get it, you bought an impressive hand cannon in an obscure holyshit cartridge and you’re going to justify that need, goddamnit. It’s $25 just to fill the cylinder with decent bullets so there’s no freakin way you’re not going to have it on the rare opportunity to put down a raging half-ton monster.
I personally choose bear mace/shotgun or pistol I can afford to practice with, but I’m a pasty fat belly cityfolk who would probably perish in a bear attack.
I like to cause trouble in these things.

That thing is huge or you are the size of a 10 year old girl! Haven’t found a good holster option for the pack. Just a few that work. They are a short drive from me though so if I ever draw something in nasty gbear country I’ll probably hit them up. Looks like a great solution despite the vw bug on your hip

That looks like it would ride to high, be hard to draw and awkwardly carry the weight. Hopefully in real life it's none of those things, seen first griz tracks this morning!
