Hey everyone, just wanted to share this with the Hunttalk crew , when I picked up my Elk yesterday, my taxidermist Jesse had just finished a cougar wall mount , it was to cool not to share , he used real moss and those fungus growths we all see on trees ,

I’m no expert but the face on that cat needs to be re-done. If I had a cat there’s no way I’d take it to that guy based on that pic. I’m not trying to be negative because I know cats are tough but imo the cat below looks great.

I agree with Stubaby that that is how you tell a great cat mount from an average one is to look at the face. The pic stubaby posted the cat looks pretty good...Having said that, I think the mossy mount is cool.

That whole mount looks cool. It does get the “butter-face” award

Thanks for the input guys , that is the first one I have ever seen in person , so I have no knowledge on what to look for, the main reason I joined Hunttalk was to learn and educate myself about all things hunting since I basically started at 43 years of age and that's what I enjoy about the Hunttalk crew , you don't hold back what your thinking and always keeping it real !! Ha ha

I wouldn’t of caught that either but now that it’s been said, the head catches my eye. What makes a good cat face verses a bad one? I can’t really compare the two faces as they are totally different poses.

Thanks Tony

Here’s some pics. The first pic is a picture of an actual live cat. Second pic is a crappy mount. Look at the face. The third pic is a good mount. Look at the difference in the detail in the mounts compared to the live cat. Which one would you pay $4,500 for and put in your house?

To me, the eyes are one of the most important things on a mount. If they're too open, it looks like they've been doing crack and if they're too closed, it looks like they're half sleeping. In the first pic, the eyes look wide open which just doesn't look natural. The rest of the mount looks awesome though.

It’s a horrible mount!!! I didn’t want to be the one to say it first. The face is horrible. A lot of taxidermists can not do predators. Most of the time these are once and a life time trophies for people. I hate it when they don’t do there research.

I've had a bobcat tanned and ready to mount for two years I still haven't figured out who to send it to. Tick tock!

Check out Rugged Edge Taxidermy in Bigfork
Mike Ballard is his name. Is really good!! He is doing a bobcat for me.

It amazes me that someone would pay for that cat mount. Phil Soucy should be at the absolute top of your list if you are looking for a cat taxidermist. It is nearly all he does, who else can say that? There are other guys that do great cats out there, but I would love to argue with anyone who thinks there is a cat taxidermist better than Phil. His cats are truly unbelievable. Catman406 on instagram, check him out.

Hey labman. I have a bob that I’d love to get done. I’m not a huge fan of “habitat” on mounts. This one is amazing!!! What do you think the cost and wait time is one a mount like this? Hopefully a decent wait time do you could send him cash along the way so your wife can’t follow the paper trail : )

Man that’s a good bob!!! All those are great mounts. Those redos are good examples of good and bad.

This snow leopard is the coolest mount of the coolest cat in the world!!

I remember the last time I spoke with Phil about turn around time he was at a Year, that could be different now. I think his prices are on his web site. When I shoot a cat that is who is getting the job, no question. My regular go to taxidermist is a world champion too, and does amazing work. But Phil does cats, period (and maybe the occasional bear or sheep). I am a business owner also and I never turn down payment, I am sure he is the same way. Have had a couple folks prepay me for work and I love those people. His Instagram is full of awesome work isn’t it! Who the hell gets to mount a snow leopard!!? ...Phil does.
