Corona virus

My biggest concern? I finally drew my bull tag after years of waiting. And I’m currently working overseas. They shut down flights (already happened to some people I previously worked with) and I’m unable to hunt. Virus be damned, I want a chance at my bull.

That's what I was thinking yesterday, this will be the year I finally draw my dream tag in the Gila and travel will be shut down or something at that point. I guess if that were the case I'd have bigger problems to worry about.

I'm right in the middle of the "your gonna die" demographic. Some people are saying the situation is being exaggerated.

When was the last time they quarantined a whole country (Italy) the Austrians have roadblocks set up and are taking their own citizens temperature before they let them back in. Those just passing through have to have enough fuel to make it non stop through the country. They quarantined a whole village in northern Germany.

Somebody somewhere thinks this is serious.

That's how my wife and I talk about it. Imagine if the president got up and said, "uh, until further notice, it's probably best if everyone just stays home for a while. Don't go out unless you absolutely have to." Even if it was the governor of your state, you'd start taking this thing pretty seriously. That is essentially what has happened in several areas of the world. And we're talking developed nations, not some third world country.

It’s an election year. This virus will be politicized terribly in the name of safety. We have an incumbent president running on his economy, who is unpopular with the media and other world policy makers. The economy is crapping at the same time that a serious virus is taking hold. Maybe it’s a coincidence maybe it’s not. But rest assured the “never waste a good crisis policy” is in full effect.

Someone else already posted this link but I'm reposting it so you can bookmark it if you haven't already. I'm not sure it is an "official" count, but it does seem to be a good index of what is going on and somewhat conservative if anything in their numbers.

And then there is this for some good, rational information. No hype.

Last night my university announce all face to face classes will be moved to online. How that happens is any one's guess, but the words "trainwreck" come to mind. I have no idea how this will work, nor how I, personally, will be able to make it work. But it will be interesting.

And last, a paraphrase from someone else, "Everything we do now will seem alarmist, in hindsight, everything we did will seem woefully inadequate." That sounds about right to me.

I'd say her science credentials are better than yours. Bury your head while you can. Our ride with this virus is just beginning.
Her beliefs and what she values is what is really different. In addition 78% of germans want to confiscate and ban personal ownership of firearms.

Her words, not unreasonable....
“When the virus is out there, the population has no immunity and no therapy exists, then 60% to 70% of the population will be infected,” she told a news conference in Berlin. “The process has to be focused on not overburdening the health system by slowing the virus’s spread. ... It’s about winning time.”

The remarks come as local authorities in Germany reported the third death in the country of a COVID-19 patient. Germany has at least 1,613 cases of the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University. —Reuters

Your choosing not to understand the motivation of my comment or simply blind to the obvious. No worries.

Whatever your differences with Merkel or German society over gun ownership is TOTALLY irrelevant to the coronavirus and its spread. I was already aware you have no worries, at least about the coronavirus. Keep your head in the sand and enjoy it while you can.

I posted this some places but it’s just as appropriate here ..

Unfortunately this situation really brings to light the general ignorance in people. when you put more stock in catchy memes and one liners then you do education and science, the ignorant vs stupid argument gets brought to the forefront.
If we can’t admit to ourselves that we are ignorant on subject, especially one that has potential dire consequences, than which are we?
In risk assessment, investing, gambling, ect we sometime find ourselves with a proposition that is that has a favorable probability. However the negative consequences of our wager, even though the out come is very unlikely negates the potential rewards, no amount of upside is worth the downside. The fat tail theory is correct here. Ignoring something dire because it’s improbable is stupidity. Given enough spins of the wheel even the most unlikely events will happen at some point.

In this case I would rather be wrong in exercising an abundance of caution and trying to mitigate the situation than the alternative of being wrong after the fact.

The just in time scenario also works for medicine, not very many unused beds in the Hospitals in Germany. In fact, they often either keep patients longer than necessary just to fill beds and the converse is also true, they discharge them early to free up beds.

Germans are also masters at information massage or outright information management. Just a week ago a local source stated there were 5 cases of the Coronavirus in my county. Then a week later they came back with there are no Virus cases in the County's central city, wordplay.

The reason Germany has fewer gun crimes is social and IMO not legislative. Most people are just much less likely to use a firearm for reasons that have nothing to do with firearms legislation, non-confrontational backstabbers. IMO there are more illegal firearms in Gerrnany than legal. The Germans are just less likely to use one and use sneakier ways. Antidotal; just a few weeks ago a remote acquaintance asked me if I wanted an AK $400. I declined.

Gun controls

I know off topic, but I call BS, way more than 22% of the population either have or have access to illegal black market firearms. I have no need, I have legal firearms, but being a gun guy and the way I look, people talk.

A little story; a guy stole my dog, a teenager found her and took her and held her for me. The guy that stole the dog kicked in the teens door waving a pistol around and took the dog back. I geared up, 12 gauge, pistol, and vest. My wife panicked and called the Police, they showed up at just about the time I did. They took one look at me and slide down in the seat of their patrol car and covered their eyes with their uniform hats. I got my dog back. The difference between reality and image.

And the relationship with the Coronavirus is if things turn to chit it is likely to get crazy here quickly. A lot of tension just under the surface here anyway.
