Corona virus

My kids are excited to hear they shut down schools 2 weeks over 1 positive. 2000 kids, they figure schools never reopen.

When this is all said and done, I wonder what kind of international pressure will be put on on China to do away with its wildlife markets. Lot of ugliness in the world has come out of that.

I made a 200 mile round trip to attend a mandatory meeting where I was told that anyone that can work from home should...

We will get through it no doubt. I think the worst possible part of the corona virus is going to be the hysteria. people swamping hospitals and taking care from those who actually need it.. also the economic implications are pretty sobering. it should be a gut check for us to get our ducks in a row and have plans in place for this stuff so supply chains keep moving for when this or something much worse happens again

Some of us won't get through it. Best of luck to everyone, but some will be unlucky. In the meantime, one colleague noted, everything we do know will seem like extraordinarily panic-stricken overkill. Post epidemic, it will all seem woefully inadequate.

A little hysteria might be a good thing if it spurs some action and thoughtful pre-planning.

I watched the same podcast...we have a June flight to Virginia for family...I doubt that will happen after listening to that epidemiologist.

Quite possibly. very quite possibly. Interesting times.

Today, I was supposed to lecture on predation ecology - threw that out and switched to the special case of predation as disease dynamics. It is so darn timely having incipient epidemics, I couldn't pass it up on the last lecture before spring break.

what's the consensus for spring break activities? I saw the board of regents is suggesting the move to online material to finish semesters/classwork

NO suggestion. Command, commences immediately after break. Infrastructure and training be damned. Interesting times.

I'm right in the middle of the "your gonna die" demographic. Some people are saying the situation is being exaggerated.

When was the last time they quarantined a whole country (Italy) the Austrians have roadblocks set up and are taking their own citizens temperature before they let them back in. Those just passing through have to have enough fuel to make it non stop through the country. They quarantined a whole village in northern Germany.

Somebody somewhere thinks this is serious.

Scariest thing I heard was his thoughts on CWD. Sounded like he thinks it will eventually make the jump to humans.
