CO Mountain Lion Ballot Initiative: Continuous Updates

I hadn't seen the final spending numbers. Interesting to see that the proponents outspent by almost a million dollars ($2.8m spent to support it and $1.9m spent against it) but it still was voted no by what seems to be a good margin to me.

Congratulations Colorado!

wow, this is great to hear, been following this through ME and as a flatlander and one who will probably never hunt/trap cats, I'm glad that this failed. I honestly thought this was going to pass fairly easy due to the language.

Of course they’re gonna sit back and cry foul of a disingenuous misinformation campaign, it’s the crux of politics.

Water under the bridge. All that matters is the voters saw through their veiled campaign.

Let’s coalesce, not let up, and move on. Big day for Colorado sportsmen and women.

It's funny to hear them cry about misleading information by the opponents with the TITLE of the initiative was misleading by having ban Trophy hunting of cats when that was already not even legal and what they were really wanting to do is ban hunting of cats period.

I think that actually hurt them as much as anything. If they can't be honest about the title of the initiative the chances of them being honest about any of it is pretty low.

“Supporters of the measure did not concede Tuesday. At a watch party in Boulder, Cats Aren’t Trophies campaign manager Samantha Miller tearfully said the group had run a “thoughtful, honest and science-based campaign,” which she said ran into misinformation by the opposition. But Miller celebrated the campaign’s progress and votes across the state.”

Let’s be fair - messaging on both sides of the issue were guilty of mis-information (or at a minimum, over-dramatization). But that’s just ‘politics’ in today’s world.

“...The pack is set loose in nature, tracked by phone app, often aided by drones. It’s a long, raucous, and terrorizing attack on unoffending native animals, who seek safety up a tree. It resembles the canned hunt as wildlife has nowhere to run, no chance to survive.

and...

“...violent predators threatening the safety of our pets, children, and neighborhoods”

We can all be better. (Now cut to @Oak saying ‘stay Golden, Pony Boy’ :) )

Spike the ball and pass legislation ensuring it cant happen....
Yes, removing freedoms from citizens always leads to great results.

Folks need to think pretty critically here on the next steps. Right now, everything I've seen from you chuckleheads would make we not want to fund you. This thing died with a margin that should worry everyone. Rather than simply pretend like it was a massive dismissal of the anti-hunting crowd, people would be well advised to continue the positive, well thought out approach that the coalition led on for further educational efforts.

Those guys won because they kept it above board and kept the shenanigans to a minimum. Grace, humility and kindness do far more to move people on these issues than bravado and boner pill models.

Ben I am curious your perspective on this: Do you feel that a 2-year, coalition-led educational push culminating in attempting to pass an amendment guaranteeing Coloradans right to and fish like Florida just passed would be the logical next step? It seems to me that would be a way to positively redirect some of the organizational momentum that was built through the 127 opposition efforts.

Yes, removing preserving freedoms from for citizens always leads to great results.

let's switch this around.

i know where you're coming from Ben. but it's two sides to the same coin. we just defeated something trying to take away freedom from a huge number of sportsmen and women with the potential of horrific future momentum shifts for the worse.

i feel it is not a good spin to say that future attempts to help codify the freedoms of sportsmen and women in a manner that makes unwarranted attacks less likely to be successful should not be spun as removing other's freedoms.

Not trying to put words in your mouth because you seem to be willing to walk both sides so to speak but how in the world do you think having legislation preventing ballot box biology in any form is bad

Absolutely 2 sides to the same coin. Hunting isn't a primary right, however. The right to seek redress against your government is a primary right.

Michigan's approach to this under Prop G is still the best effort I've seen, and has achieved a very similar outcome in terms of de-politicizing wildlife.

The issue is not about preventing ballot box biology, but rather limiting the tools of the citizens to change their government.

I've seen good attempts at this and some bad. But regardless, the right to hunt and fish amendments aren't going to save use from the anti-hunters. We as hunters are the people who should be doing that through education & better relationships with those in your circles whom you can influence.
