Chukar Dog Injury

Good luck, i'll be curious to see what the find. Seems odd to go from healthy hunt to such a crash without any real trace of a reason.

What pack did your friend have? we've been considering a sling just haven't bit the bullet yet, get a discount on ruffwear stuff, but don't want to buy that one just because we can get a discount.

Nastynate & others: make sure the peroxide is in date, the wife says it works much better when in date, I just assumed it had a date since everything has a date.

We always carry a few spare dog booties with us. dogbooties.com has inexpensive ones great for putting on over a cut pad to help make it a bit more comfortable getting back to the truck. we'll run them year round if we're in rocks, snow or just needing more protection

I’m still thinking about it.

I used to have a good dog vet box in my rig but it got old, eventually removed. I’m going to buy a solid dog medical kit for the truck. I’ll look into including saline with it for dehydration and hypoglycemia as an extreme emergency option.

In my pack, I already carry forceps from owning GSPs. Each had a porky episode.

I’ll consider buying a dog carrier package for my pack. She was comfortable in it. If my buddy hadn’t been there, I would have fireman carried her off the hill. Potentially uncomfortable and it would have placed pressure directly on her wound.

Final Rise includes a dog carrier on its pack. I’m not changing but good to know. My son uses a FR pack. View attachment 358341

Otherwise, honey for hypoglycemia, wrap for wounds, maybe saline for eyes. I need to research it more.

My medical kit in my pack yesterday was forceps and toilet paper.
Glucose gel packets from Walgreens has worked well for me. One of my pointers would need it on occasion. I learned her signs, would stop squirt the packet in her mouth, give her some water, and a few minutes she was back at it. Some dogs can go from fine to seizure very quickly skipping some steps in-between.

Update 2:

Emergency vet did a deeper biopsy on the body fluid and found bile. She left me a phone message at 11pm saying she’s thinking gallbladder.

The ultrasound this morning by the internal med vet leads them to think gallbladder too. Surgery scheduled for today. It’s either a duct or they will repair the gallbladder. They said gallbladder will not be removed.

Ultrasound did reveal 7 puppies! There survivability through this process is unknown.

I talked with the original vet too. He said he’s never had a gallbladder issue in 40 years as a vet. Gallbladder surgery is out of his skill set. We did talk about the how of gallbladder injury. He has a lot of chukar dogs as patients. He’s sure she crashed and strategically landed on her gallbladder. He’s seen liver, spleen and other cliff fall injuries but never a gallbladder. Lucky Cady.

I’ll give another update after the surgery.

I’ve owned a lot of bird dogs in my life. How close you are to them varies. Cady’s situation has the whole house teary eyed when we talk about it.

Update 3:

Cady’s out of surgery and doing fine. She’s in critical care at least until tomorrow. Doctor saw 11 bumps that could be pups but only confirmed 7 heart beats. The pups are little and may have not all progressed to heart beats.

When the surgical vet, vet number 5 on the journey, opened Cady up, they found the gallbladder RIPPED off. Wow. She must have had a big crash. They closed the hole and cleaned the abdomen of bile.

Lots of concern still but we’re moving in the right direction.

Glad to hear they found the problem. Sounds like she’s in good hands. Praying for a full recovery and healthy pups.

My gosh, what a rollercoaster for you guys.
You should be proud of your advocacy for your dog. Sadly, there are some folks out there that would have just let fate run its course and wouldn’t have gone to the extent you have gone seeking answers.
All pets are special, but hunting dogs are the cream of the crop.

Yep, they're part of the family.

Pulling for Cady, and I know many of us here at HT are...I have to prepare myself every time I click the link for update.

thinking of you and your family. I know it's hard.

Glad they finally found the cause and hoping for the best recovery.
