You splurge on a diesel heater yet?
Haven't. It's surprising how much heat that lantern puts out in the canopy. I also have another little heater if it gets really cold. Truck camping also means I can bring good bags. I don’t leave heaters on all night. mtmuley

Those diesels are sweet about half gallon probably keep you warm all night and it sits outside the truck

I have had the topper on my last 3 trucks and haven't ever regretted it. The current one I bought new when this truck was new....ext cab 8 ft bed F150. When loading for camp it absolutely swallows gear. Unless you are gonna be doing an atv or NEVER going on rough stuff I am anti trailer. This is from experience with CPO pulling his trailer to camp because he refuses to get an actual truck with an actual bed (5.5 beds are just trunks IMO). Trailers kill mileage, act like anchors on sketchy terrain (especially snow and ice) and put much more stress on transmissions......add to that the fact that even with his trailer I always seem to be packing a good deal of other people's shit in my bed.

I camped in my topper for elk camp the first time this year. I really enjoyed it. Being able to be mobile is the best part. We have an enclosed trailer also my dad will be camping out of next year. If you need the room the trailer is probably the way to go but it will definitely limit camping spots and rough forest roads.

Thanks guys. It will be for hauling gear coolers etc. not planning to stay in it I might haul my tent and stuff in it.
Pro to the little trailer is I just keep everything in it and leave it in there. But I don’t really want to drag it around when hunting or unhook it and come back for it. I will start looking at toppers. I would like the side windows to open by hinging on the top so I could build some boxes to store some stuff in. Especially when trapping season hits

Looked at some camper shells today. Trying to decide on if I need the side windows that open up or not. Part of me would like to be able to open them up and reach inside and get stuff out. But then again I don’t know how much I would use that
I have that feature on my topper. I use them more than I ever thought I would. Although the slide with screen is nice for sleeping and venting. 50/50

A lot of trucks have too tall of sides to effectively use a reach in side window unless your like 6'7" or so. You can open them a little and block em to allow ventilation if needed though. It is a pain to climb all the way up there and find that one thing you want, which is up by the cab. No free lunch either way.

I used a topper forever and now a 3rd gen 4runner with a drawer system. I also have a small tow behind camper. I love the ease of just sleeping in the vehicle, but late season when it gets dark early and light late can make for long nights in small spaces. The camper is much more comfortable in those situations.
Pulling a camper to the places I hunt especially with snow sucks and is downright dangerous at times. Buy whichever you want the most then save for the other!

Got caught in an early snow pulling a trailer from Coeur d'Alene to Butte on I-90 few years back. Never want to do that again. Use a Topper with a bed rug, & a Teton sleeping pad. Add a hitch haul for added exterior storage space & have done quite well over the past 5 years of in/out state hunting.
