I was reading a thread on another forum about the risk of hantavirus with floorless shelters. In hindsight, I am guessing that risk is minimal compared to the risk at the lookout in the photo below. My wife was initially pretty proud of herself for reserving a night the first week it was open to the public. When we got there, we immediately saw that we needed to mouseproof it. We plugged all of the holes, but then, we listened to mice gnawing on the plug material all night. I had one mouse race me up the stairs (he was on the railing). I am pretty sure I would have beat him had I not been carrying a load of gear.

After that trip, neither my wife nor my daughter have expressed any interest in staying at another lookout. Since they thought the mouse problem in the lookout was bad, I will probably not suggest that we stay in one of the three-sided shelters that are scattered around the local National Forest.
