Bucks and bulls on backpacks

Was looking on my hard drive and realize I've got a pile of pain and misery photos, mostly just stuffed backpacks. On carrying elk heads out, I only once strapped one on with the points up. That's the worst way. Also, you can save around 15 lbs if you cape and cut the meat off the skull, which adds up if your any distance from the trailhead/vehicle.

Not much of a photo. First bear packed out of "bear canyon" near Bozeman. Tossed the frame in the trash & bought a Dana Design astraplane a couple weeks later.

I seem to forget to take pictures once its time to cut them up and stuff them in a pack.

A few of my favorites from the recent past.

It was so full of deadfall where this was I couldn't make the downtine work. And once I got in the open I didn't feel like changing it. I also found out you need a ridiculous amount of orange to not look like a shooter bull from some angle.

It wasn't too top heavy but that was because I didn't spend much time scraping the meat off the hide. It started out fine but got "everywhere" heavy quick. But my legs weren't tired so I just plugged along and stopped every quarter mile or so and didn't push it to prove I was a badass for once in my life. When I got home after about a dozen rests I weighed the pack and it came in at 92 pounds which shocked the hell out of me because I wasn't all that tired. I became a huge fan of those Tibet boots, a reasonable pace, and hiking the M with bricks in my pack.

But is it art?

Even dumb enough to carry out the ones I find

Even old men with bad backs smile when loaded up

Cool one I took of a friend

My son's 1st 2 elk, coming out with me. He'll learn soon enough, that packing the antlers is an honor.
