Black or Grizz

Usually, I'd be pretty confident in my bear id. I got this on a camera here in MT. The head looks like a black bear to me but the shoulder makes me question a bit. This is the only pic my camera got for whatever reason.

Black Bear v. Grizzly (Brown) Quiz

That's what FWP should use for their quiz. Some of those are tough.

I guessed Griz, but it was a guess, since not enough info / clear view of characteristics available. No shot for me, regardless of which tag I held.

I'm less concerned about it being pretty obviously a black bear, and more interested in it looking like a very large black bear!

Admittedly, I voted Griz based on the should hump and what appears to be a lower butt. The snout is up in the air for me. Snap shots are tough. I would definitely need more than one frame to decide on a shot.

I voted black bear. It's left front paw is off the ground which makes it look like it's has a hump.

I'd say black bear, and a smaller one at that. They can look huge when they're little, if that makes sense

So the ID exercise is futile and merely an opinion poll. It is a nice photo though.
(Opinions are like doe tags ... everybody has one.)

Color/patter just seems black bear, I guess black bear at first just on that.
No noticeable claws
Ears don't seem the right shape
Face doesn't seem the right shape

My guess is sub 120lbs... maybe like 4.5ft

Seems like if you have to ask it's almost always a black bear.
