Big bear: woud you?

Typical knee-jerk reaction to something that likley happens less than one time per year....more stupid laws.

Just like the TSA...........

Diddo that - there is no way I'd have the walnuts to go into a bear den with a flashlight to shoot a trophy like that, or any bear... just unethical to me.

I'd maybe chase him out first, then shoot - just not inside his den.

HUH ? It's OK to get a bear to leave his den and then shoot it ? Please explain the thought behind this. You say you don't have the Walnuts but it's Unethical. I think the first statement is correct. Most of us, me included, don't have the NutZ to do soemthing liek that, but to wait by the den till it get's outside then kill it makes it "OK" ?

This dude hunted for 5 hours outside the den waiting for the bear to either come or go... not knowing it was even in the den. To me, that is a legit hunt if he were to make the kill during daylight hours & while in season.

But yes... by going in the den and shooting a half asleep, lethargic bear with a flashlight seems unethical to me - weather it was in season or not.

And no... I wouldn't have the nutz to crawl in and look, but if I knew he was in there, yes, I would do what I could to get him to leave..

Just my opinion - sorry I wasn't clear.

That's just the thing, the bear was popping his jaws and laid back his ears. Sounds like it was going to charge. I don't think he said it was snoring.

How about throwing in a Fire cracker (Where legal to set off fire crackers in the woods) to get him to come out...... Then WACK him !

Still unethical ? Or is it ok cuz he's awake now and outside the den. ;)

DUDE... I have that Issue with my Wife some mornings. It is hard to say if they are sleeping or mad sometimes when you get that close !!!

Charge? The bear is backed into a den with one way out, what do you expect him to do, roll over and play dead?

Ya - self defense would have saved him from getting greased by the public...

It's all about image you know.. I like Moosie's fire cracker ideal though....kinda like the 4th of July... and that's always a nice image...

So if I understand you correctly you feel sorry for the bear in the cave. When do you feel sorry for those varmits or deer or elk you shoot? When do you say...... hey coyote, I'm going to let you live another day. Lets hear it!

Reading comprehension must be tough up north, my point is why is anybody surprised the bear growled and "charged" when its only way out was being blocked by a dude with a flashlite...simple enough?

I have to reach way back here, but one of the things I recall about fair chase from my hunters ed class was that your quarry should have a fair or reasonable chance at escaping the hunter. And I have a hard time seeing how taking a bear in his den follows that principle. I think waiting outside would allow for a chance at escape because he could have come out after dark when shooting hours were closed, or after the hunter had left.

That being said, I'm not condemning the guy (he certainly put in the work and earned that trophy), I just don't think I would have done the same thing.

Buckm, I had 3 more examples I wanted to bring up... you've killed one of them ;)

can we still shoot deer and elk in their beds or is that a no no now too????

I don't think that comparison is valid because they can wind you in their beds and be long gone before you get a shot off.

I figure a bear in his den is a lot like getting the drop on a guy while he's asleep in his own bed. Sure I keep a .45 in the night stand, but if I'm down for a long winter's nap more often than not I'd bet that I'd be dead.

Like I said before though, I wouldn't have done it, but I don't think any less of him for doing it.
