Big bear: woud you?

Is it illegal to spotlight jackrabbits in MT? Shooting from the vehicle? I wouldn't want to incriminate myself, but this sounds like a fun family activity. :D

If I were in his shoes it would all depend on how alert the bear was when I found him. If he was sleepy and dopey I probably wouldn't shoot. If he was alert and growling at me like this bear was I'd have no problem pulling the trigger.

G.H. one of our favorite sports as kids was to go in implement sheds and old chicken houses and shoot roosted English sparrows with our blowguns. That and shooting rats and mice at night with
.22 cal ratshot made for some great times. Oh and how about frog gigging? That was a HOOT!

I can't wait till our Meat hunting more ethical than the rest of us hunter pipes in..........
Moosie, are you insinuating that the bear hunter didn't kill that bear simply for the meat? :)

Now back to the bear in the cave. It is as simple as man against beast. One on one. Hopefully you could wake him up so he had a chance to fight back. I think its fair game. This is part of what bears do. It would be like if you shot a elk in his bed while he or she is sleeping at five hundred yards.

There are a lot of confused hypocrites in this world that that don't know what team they are on.

Starlings and pigeons often fly directly to the light when trapped in a barn loft at night. The light holder stands about 2 steps behind the guy with the baseball bat or the tennis racket. The old bat in the shop with feathers stuck to it, always brought a smile to my face when visiting my parents. :D

Man, I wonder why kids nowadays need video games. So much fun to make up outside!!!

Good for that guy! Behind him 100% I would have done the same. Except I think I would have used a spear.

If and when I find another bear dened up, your getting a call. Randy's film crew will also get the call. Should be good entertainment. OH I'm getting ahead of myself. The Bill to legalize spears in a hunting season has to pass first.

Tjones, So your saying its not a gimmee?:D

I can see how those who haven't done it may just see the moment right before the shot of a lion in a tree as being not a very "sporty" moment, but they really need to go on a grueling trek through thigh deep snow for god knows how far, to get up to a treed lion, then have it bale out and run another mile or two. Spend all those days training puppies, tending wounds of dogs from that big tom that didn't tree but decided to throw some claws around, and on and on that occurs with any form of hunting with dogs.

Much of the sport of hunting with dogs is all the time leading up to the hunt. IMHO, Its for the dog, not you! I don't care if its a quail, a duck, a hog or a lion, its ALL THE SAME. To me, a dog that finally pinned down that wylie old late season rooster pheasant on high pressure ground in IA, is just as cool as that hound that treed that mean ol lion in MT. There is an intrinsic value between a trained gun dog and its handler that can't be measured. The hunt isn't just for ME, when you have a dog, completing the kill is just you doing your job inside the hunt. It isn't just about that final second of blasting that lion out of the tree or the rooster out of the sky. Sporty? Train a gun dog to the point you can let him out on a lion track and put a lion in a tree, or send one out across a half frozen pond on a search for a live but wounded duck and watch him work to it without making a command and I think your definition of sporty will change drastically. This stuff just doesn't happen magically. I can literally see the gears turning in my big brown drahthaar's friggin skull when I miss a rooster. You can see him just thinking, "Jeeezusss Christmas dummy, why am I running all over this field?" He sees a flushed bird fly off after two shots, he will look at you in pure disgust, its uncanny.

How's does walking with aid of artificial light, compare to using the light to harvest big game? As long as you don't use it to kill one, it's not even the same thing. You have a right to cary a loaded rifle with a light, even to spotlight. Ever here of the 2nd Amendment? I wonder if the fact that the bear was killed during legal shooting hours, that it was alright.

I came across a bear in his den a few years back, while elk hunting. As I walked past the hole in a fir tree, he had his den in, and he rolled his head out and looked at me. I was just few feet from him, as I walked by I pointed my .280 at him and told him to stay put. I doubt he knows English, but he just watched me walk by. I had no thought of killing him like that. Just me.

Are you stu......d? Read the regs posted on the first page. It says you cannot shine a light in the woods and have a loaded gun in your possession. Now I was making a point about taking the law to the wrong context.

Poor tjones. I'm sorry you haven't found your cat yet. Last time I attempted to cat hunt ,.I put up three different cats. I would say cat hunting is not a difficult sport. It just takes a few resources, a little determination and a little luck. Keep at it, .you'll get one if a wolf doesn't eat your dogs first.

Now, why are you so stuck on this airplane thing? Do you feel left out or something? Speak your mind or quit with all the jabs.

Now if I can just keep the rod tip up till JC shows up.

No wingnut I'm not stu....d, but you sure are. On page 10 of the Montana regulations it states, under Artificial Light.
It is illegal for anyone to take or attempt to take any game animal or game bird with the aid of projected artificial light.

Explain yourself, or are you too stu..d?

" the possession of any firearm with cartridges in the chamber or magazine or loaded with powder and ball or a strung bow, unless the bow is cased, while attempting to project any artificial light into areas where wildlife may be found is prima facie evidence of a violation of this section. "

You guys are talking about 2 different states.

I'd say pretty even if you could follow tracks right to the den, eh.

Interesting question.. I bet it would take me much more effort to find a good bear in a den than to find a good bear out feeding.

Edited.. Looking at the regs, it's illegal to disturb dens.

I may be stupid or confused but that is for another thread. This discussion is not in our state . I referenced the state this happened in.
