Best Hunting Essay Ever?

Hal Herring had McGuane on the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Podcast a while back. It’s a good listen.

Hal said that McGuaune’s friend Jim Harrison, a hell of a good writer himself, said that McGuane was the best fishing writer ever!

As I took that step, I knew he was running. He wasn't in the browse at all, but angling into invisibility at the rock wall, racing straight into the elevation, bounding toward zero gravity, taking his longest arc into the bullet and the finality and terror of all you have made of the world, the finality you know that you share even with the Princess and your babies with their inherited and ambiguous dentition, the finality that, any minute now, you will meet as well.

That’s some good stuff there.

I don’t mind the disparate trails; it all matters.

Has someone a hunting essay? I need one for my University and I have no great ideas. I know that this can be called a little bit cheating but need to do everything to find or to write an essay. The main topic is hunting but, I don't know what to tell and what not to tell in an essay. Should I mention killing animals, dead animals and other gross things?

That wouldn't be called "a little bit cheating," it would be called plagiarism. And it would be detected by plagiarism software a dollar to a dime. You gotta write your own essay my friend... and if it is about hunting, you'll need to include the "gross stuff."

It's incredible how certain essays can leave a lasting impact and shape our aspirations. If you're looking for more exceptional essays on hunting, you might enjoy "A Sand County Almanac" by Aldo Leopold. It's not solely about hunting, but Leopold's reflections on conservation and the ethics of hunting are profound. Another classic is "The Old Man and the Boy" by Robert Ruark, which offers insightful perspectives on hunting and the bond between generations. These works capture different facets of the hunting experience and are definitely worth exploring if you haven't alre

I read that article in Outside magazine in August of 1978, back before the magazine became a Patagucci catalog for patchouli wearing hipsters. I was in a fire camp at the fairgrounds in Redding, California waiting to get re-assigned to another fire. Folks had dropped off old books and magazines for the firefighters to read while stuck in the 102 degree heat. Been a McGuane fan ever since. The Longest Silence is the best fishing book I've ever read. Some of his novels can get a little weird though.
