Lots of fog and rain today.



It cleared up right at sunset for a couple neat photos. Apparently elk don't care about beautiful sunsets because they didn't show themselves this afternoon.

Camp is set up! This morning my buddy Rob and I glassed up some bulls while drinking coffee.


Now we are fine tuning camp and going exploring.

I may have also wasted $45 trying to shoot a grouse

I was thinking the same darn thing, but everything looks good to me right now!!!!

This fallen tree saved the life of a single mother and prevented two calves from becoming orphans...

My camps have never felt so spartan.

sn.outdoors - do you switch to still hunting / calling in those conditions? I rarely spend time glassing elk during archery season, but I've started doing it a bit more this year.

Good morning from NM!





Yesterday evening I had a bull come into 5 yards... broadside....

I wish the season was open! Because then this morning I had 3 more shooters pass by at 30 yards!

NM is beautiful!
Now off to scout more and hopefully find a deer.

sn.outdoors - do you switch to still hunting / calling in those conditions? I rarely spend time glassing elk during archery season, but I've started doing it a bit more this year.

There's a couple pinch points I sit on in the mornings here, but after about 8am I spend the rest of the day still hunting. It's a frustrating tactic in this area due to how thick the vegetation is. I hunt this place like I hunt whitetails in northern Wisconsin... Slow and slow. It's not my favorite.

NM second archery season starts the 15th in every unit.

Dan has deer, bear and turkey tags in his pocket too.

CJ hit the nail on the head. Elk opens the 15th and I’ll be ready to go.
I don’t really want to shoot a bear, but I have the tag. So deer and turkey need to start cooperating more. I did see a mule deer doe a few hours ago. That’s a start!

I feel a lot better about this trip than last year. Still frustrating at times, but all in all it was a good hunt.

I'll edit my play by play write up and get it posted before I start my NM hunt. Hopefully I hear a bugle or two on that trip.

I promise there is plenty of bacon in camp!


Today we ate bacon in our Mac and cheese.

We got his really hard all yesterday by storms. I got pinned down on the mountain twice by hail and nasty lightning storms.

We’ve found tons of elk, some turkey (none killed yet, but I totally missed one )


And lots of mule deer does. I’ve only glassed one bear and haven’t seen any bucks yet.
