Annual elk rifle thread

I used a Ruger M77 Hawkeye 30/06 that I have hunted off and on with for about 15 years. I normally use 150 grain core-loks, but this year I used Federal premium 180 NP. This is my 18th/19th elk and I either use a 7 mm mag or a 30/06. It took two shots in the shoulder at about 75 yards.

Bergara ridge special purpose in .308. Shot factory 150g accubonds all season on antelope, deer, and elk. Never had an animal make it over 50 yards this year.View attachment 252127
I know where that gun range is. Sometimes there are bighorn sheep on that dirt hill backdrop, and for two months a year there are domestic sheep grazing behind the far ridge.

Nope. Used an .06 before that. Still have it. I think there is something to be said about using a rifle for a long time and being extremely comfortable about what the rifle can do and what you as a shooter can do with it. mtmuley
I still have my 06 also. Killed my first elk at 12 years old with that rifle and probably the next 20 or so before I started needing more gun. Not sure why, but it sure has been fun.

Yep, it’s crazy. There is steal out to 1000 yards on that hillside. there was a ram with a rotting horn or something hanging real close last couple years too. Crazy area for a band of sheep to live and super disappointing about the sheep up there.

Remington M7 action that's been worked over, 22" Hawk Hill, B&C stock, Badger M7 bottom metal for AICS mags.

Scoped with a Nightforce SHV 3-10x42. Chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, and shoots 156 Bergers at 2650.....

1 bull....

Edit-I re-read the op, and since I didn't go west this year, I guess it wasn't this years elk rifle. I killed a bull with it last year, and hopefully it will get to go to CO for 3rd season next year.

No dedicated elk rifle but like to mix it up. 280 Remington, 28 Nosler, 350 Remington mag, and on a couple occasions a 54 cal muzzle loader. Killed lots of elk with my Hoyt. This year however was the 280 Remington with a 160 Accubond.
What were you shooting when my brother was with you? It must have impressed him because I hear that story a lot. 😀
