Annual elk rifle thread

My elk rifle last year was a 270 sherman short using a Bighorn Origin as the base. 20" barrel, MPA Ultralite chassis, and a Leupold MK 5 3.8-18 to top it off. Slinging the 150 grain ABLR at 3075 fps. Absolutely love this rifle. Took 2 elk and a deer last year, planning on a few more this fall.

Top is my 270ss, bottom is a 6mm CM.

I was a lucky SOB as a 12 year old and won a 340 Weatherby Mark V at an RMEF banquet. I’ve used it ever since I was old enough to handle the recoil. I shoot 225 gr. Barnes TSX. Here is a pic out elk hunting:

I also won a 300 SAUM at a different RMEF banquet and have a ton of factory ammo I’ve hoarded. I should probably start using it, but it is so hard to leave the 340 at home.

My new elk rifle (bottom - 280 AI) and my brother’s new elk rifle (top - 58 cal). I think mine is going to be much nicer to carry.

I finally picked my new elk rifle up and scoped it. It weighs 7 pounds, 5 ounces, unloaded. Next week, I plan to begin load work up with a variety of Bergers (168, 175, and 180 gr) and RL26.

BTW - mine is much nicer to carry than my brother’s.

My Browning 6.5PRC is sitting at the store waiting for me to fill out the paperwork. It'll be wearing an Athlon Helos 4-20 though I'm not sure it'll be an elk rifle or if that scope will remain on it. It'll be sending 124Hammers or Hornady 147s.

My Kimber Hunter 280ai with 143Hammers is still my preferred rifle and is getting ready for spring bear.

Initial Pressure testing using RL26 and 124gr Hammers at 70 degrees. Max load shown spiked and expressed danger hot but a couple grains lower I was at 3314. I'll tinker a bit to find the right load this week as RL26 can get moody above 80degrees temp and I don't want the rifle to boom boom

Lots of good info in this thread. I'm primarily a bow hunter but looking to brush off my old 270 to take advantage of some other hunting opportunities!

I prefer archery hunting, but cant stop spending money and filling my safe! These are my 2 go to elk/deer rifles.
