Alabama deer 2024

I took yesterday off and went out for a bit this afternoon. It was bitterly cold today/tonight. With the wind chill is was 3° this morning. I saw a ton of deer tonight. Mostly does with theee small bucks. A lot of single does and small groups moving around with all three bucks cruising around.

Ok funny story for the night that is definitely TMI…I am not sure what temp the “liquid” in an port-a-potty freezes but, after an emergency visit, we were definitely below that magical temp today in Alabama.

No picture but I will be back out next weekend.

Good luck! I’m packing for my annual Alabama hunt as I type this.

140” is a tall order in the South. I commend you for diving into the hunting opportunities, wherever your current assignment is.
Yep. Before moving out west, I hunted my whole life in central MS and never killed a 140. I didn’t realize North Alabama was that much better.

My deer last year was 134. He was nice but I have seen bigger deer in the area. Nothing from my hunts yet. Lots of 8 points that are 110-125. Just want something bigger.
That's a solid deer for anywhere in the South outside of the MS River delta, so huge congrats. I know it's fun hunting where you can see lots of activity like you've been into, but I wouldn't rule out getting in the timber with them. Sounds like you're seeing a lot of pre-rut activity with the young bucks showing interest. I'd be looking for areas adjacent to where the does are bedding or feeding, and where you have edge cover and changes, even if subtle, in terrain type (pine to hardwood, woods to cutover, swamp edges, etc.) if you want to take a buck the caliber you are after. Not saying it can't happen in a big open field - done it plenty of times, but when you are hunting a whitetail of that caliber you basically have to hunt them like an entirely different animal. Often that means hunting places where you can't see as far, or where you aren't seeing the numbers of deer, but when you do, it may be the one you're looking for. Also, don't rule out late morning and midday sits near bedding areas, especially with the rut timing and the extreme cold we're experiencing.

Good luck. Enjoying following along.

I went out yesterday but honestly I have been feeling lousy all week.

I did see one definite shooter, and a ton of does. I got pictures of this little buck just standing 10 yards off the road…in a closed areaIMG_1358.jpegIMG_1356.jpegI plan on taking it easy today and watching football. Hopefully, I will head out again next week. I have had a serious cough for almost two weeks and it makes it almost impossible to sit in a stand without blowing the area out.

Get well soon, we're counting on you to provide some excitement while the rest of us have the winter blues. I did go to the outdoor range today and shot 5 different rifles. Had to get back in the truck twice to thaw the fingers back out.
