Airplane bird collisions.

By AprilW: For some reason, Del has it so his nick won't log out.

Anyways, this is one big reason I won't fly. We were in a plane years ago that hit a duck and it dented in the nosecone, caused the radar to go out, and we got to have an "emergency" landing at the nearest airport. Good thing we didn't hit an eagle.

After waiting 12 hours for them to fix the plane, we get back in the air. The pilot then announces an airplane mechanic has joined us in case there is any problems. I have always wondered if the guy would be doing repairs on the nosecone while in flight?

When i worked for "Sperry Flight Systems" in the 70`s .. I remember a British company that invented a "Bird Cannon" that would shoot a "turkey" into aircraft windshields [for testing them] the testing engineering team at "airbus" kept reporting that the "turkeys were going through the windshield ..through the cabin door and into the fourth row of seats! After seeing video of several tests... the bird cannon manufacturer replied. "THAW OUT THE TURKEY"

The ponds around San Francisco International Airport are filled with rubber balls to prevent ducks from lingering

Does this actually work? I could see this being just a good way to encourage duck dodge ball. :D

While I worked for Northrup World Wide in Iran, I worked on a Beoing 727 that the pilot had reported something strange happening to the rudder controls while they were coming in over the Albhorz Mountains. His flight report said they were at about 22 ,000 feet when they felt like they struck something. When we got to the very top of the rudder, there were goose feathers and bits and pieces stuck in the seams and joints of the skin. Guess there was an errant goose flying south at 22,000 feet.

My roomate worked for a Pest Control outfit...that used to drive around Luke AFB... and shoot Doves/birds all day when the planes were flying in and out..it was a neat job.. but just didn`t pay much... now he is a Big Cheese in the Aero space industry.

I've heard the same story at Boeing for the last 25 years :D
