Aging mule deer bucks!

Deer 5

Aged 3.5

I feel like it could be the same age as the other two, but like it could also have been 4.5. Maybe I’m wrong. Looking at the jaw, if I had to pick an age, I’d pick 3.5, but i do think there are some things that might point toward older. Looking at the body, I’d have gone 4.5. Obviously the pics I’m giving you of the body aren’t the best.

IIRC I got 103lbs of meat.

Deer 2

Aged 3.5

Looking at the jaw I’d probably still say 3.5 if I had to pick just one year, but I’d be much more willing to say 4.5. Still, it was aged 3.5. Looking at the body, I’d lean more toward 4.5-5.5.

IIRC I got 105lbs of meat. I could be wrong, but it was over 100lbs.

Here are my guesses:
Deer 1 - 5.5-6.5
Deer 2 - 3.5-4.5
Deer 3 - 6.5-7.5
Deer 4 - 4.5 - 5.5
Deer 5 - 4.5 - 5.5
Deer 6 - 3.5 4.5
Deer 7 - 4.5 - 5.5
Deer 8 - 6.5 - 7.5
Deer 9 - 2.5 - 3.5
Deer 10 - 2.5 - 3.5

How did I do!? You have had some great seasons, nice job!

Again aged 3.5 by tooth wear.

I have a hard time calling him 3.5, but again, looking at charts and looking at his jaw, I’d pick 3.5. He has aspects of tooth wear that go higher, but for the most part, he fits the 3.5 line on the charts I’ve found. His body doesn’t say that to me. He has more knobs and bumps on his bases than any deer I’ve killed.

124lbs boneless meat, for roughly 372lbs estimated live weight. Largest I’ve killed and second largest I’ve processed.

So far I’ve posted all those that were aged 3.5. Those are 2,5,7,9 and 10. You missed none of those 5 by more than one year. They were all ages by tooth wear aging, which I’m not confident in, and I do not think they were all 3.5, but so far that’s all I have. I will send teeth for cementum analysis after application season.

I would say 4.5 based on antlers and head. I don't know how to age by tooth wear.

Deer 1 id guess at 4.5 and deer 2 is most definitely older. Its my understanding that mule deer mature later than WT and shouldnt be harvested until 7.5 under most circumstances.

Deer 1

Aged 4.5 by tooth wear. I no longer have the jaw bones and have no pictures. I may send a tooth from the Euro into Matson Labs when I send the rest after application season.

Deer 6

Also aged 4.5 by tooth wear. Would not be legal under my home state’s antler restrictions. I’m not convinced that he would ever be legal regardless of age. No jaws. Can send a tooth from the Euro.

Deer 8

Aged 4.5 by tooth wear. Estimated love weight of 412lbs. Largest bodied deer I’ve ever seen in person. Added a pic of the mount because the live deer made the antlers looks small.

So

2,5,7,9,10 — 3.5yrs
1,6,8. — 4.5yrs.

I’m anxious to see what cementum annuli has to say about them, but that will have to wait until after application season.

Deer 4

Aged 5.5 by tooth wear. I no longer have a jaw bone, but can send a tooth from the Euro.

Finally got some more time. Last buck that I’ve had aged.

Deer 3. 8.5 years old. Definitely the most tooth wear of any of my bucks, but still nothing extreme. Makes me wonder if the bio over shot a little. It also has the most pronounced Roman nose on the euro mount.
