Montanans how long since your last mule deer

That’s not what I was asking. Not saying I do either. Just asking if people eat more wild game or farmed
meat.

We live in wild game probably 95% of the time. If I feed you dinner at the house it’s an animal I harvested. That said I was lined up to buy a beef from a rancher I know had I not killed a moose this year. I love that country he works on and think it would have made it more enjoyable.

I appreciate the feedback. I grew up eating whitetail, cottontail, some occasional birds, and 1/2 a cow a year from a friend. Still try and do the same for my family.

I grew up in rural Indiana with friends that raised beef cattle, Bos Taurus, hogs, and we even got locally grown popcorn. Kinda miss it. Although none of those families are still producing.

I have never killed a mule deer. Only a couple whiteys with my truck. But I grew up different than most. I killed a bull elk that gross scored 360 and net 348 otc public when I was 12. Seen the bucks my dad killed and uncles. Plus new what is out there. Shed hunting. Just never seen or had an opportunity to kill a giant muley.

First Tracks did a taste test with different game. Nobody got them all right, I don't believe. I think that means that any species is about the same and that includes Mule Deer. That's been my experience, too.

In my case, I'll shoot the first legal elk that presents itself. With mule deer, I am mostly content to see them on the mountain. If a really nice buck comes my way, it will be a great day. Otherwise, I let them go about their day.

But if I was with a friend, took him to my favorite spot, spotted the old buck, got him in position with a perfect play, also had the deer in my scope at the shot but let him kill him (his first 4pt, about a 6.5 year old), then helped him pack it out, does that count?

Pretty clear to me that most of you guys just need to lace em up tighter and hunt harder…. 2010 for me in MT. I did shoot a buck in Alberta in 2013.

And I am someone whom I wouldn’t consider picky. A legit 160 class buck is going home with me if I am presented with the opportunity.

We eat game. Or i should say, I eat game. My wife and daughter like ground meat, but even still only once a week ( taco night). We buy chicken, and occasionally rib eyes and lamb.
So an elk lasts two years.
I'm on a cycle, elk every other year. A deer and antelope in between. I stopped killing more than we need. And I'm not feeding the dogs an elk a year like some people I know . That really bugs me.
